That's fair, things got a bit weaker after the eclipse but Fantasia is where pretty much all thematic consistency was thrown out in favour of constant Puck-memeing.
I do really like all the different fantasy stuff Miura's been throwing in, with everything from Mermaids to trolls to ancient sea-gods but at its heart it feels like it isn't really Berserk-like. Still looks great and has cool ideas, but it's not what sold me on Berserk and I imagine it isn't for a lot of other people either.
Lost Children was a pretty great extension to the story but from there on I haven't been feeling it too much. The fucked-up fairy tale thing that I feel like all of Fantasia's going for only really feels like it worked in Lost Children, but depending on how the whole Griffith/princess/psychic-girl/mule-knight thing works out I could almost see Berserk being totally redeemed. There's so much potential.

The way that I really see it going down is that Elf Island turns out to be no help and Casca's permantly lost. At this point the godhand offer Guts the power to take revenge at the cost of his friends. I think there's still some substance left to Berserk even though I agree that The Golden Age works best as a self-contained story.
Guts' struggle reminds me of the protagonist of Michael Mann's crime movie Thief, Frank. Frank survives because he 'doesn't give a fuck,' and the movie's all about how he's an effective and powerful criminal when he's got nothing to lose and only gets bogged down and careless when the stakes are raised.
This is a lot like Guts. After his training session where he became The BLACKED Swordsman he pretty much gave up on people and just lived battle to battle, but then Griffith came along and tried to make a career for him, complete with friends and responsibilities outside of himself. This was working for a while but at the end of The Golden Age it all goes to shit and even though he still has Casca, which was really what mattered most to him, he still runs away.
Now the old blacksmith dude's hammered some sense into Guts but can it last? Protecting a bunch of useless kids and nobles is slowly killing him and I think it'll be interesting to see how his resolve holds up. I think this was the intention behind the Berserker Armour but it wasn't executed too well. I think it would be thematically fitting if Guts actually abandoned the JRPG at some point in the future. That or he dies, things can't go on the way they are forever without some unsatisfying asspull.
