You're never too old, just don't try to cosplay some teenage anime twink. There are plenty of middle-aged characters to choose from which younger cosplayers couldn't pull off, just pick something which matches your body type and you're golden. If you're horribly misshapen or otherwise ugly as sin, you can go for some sort of full-body outfit or a humorous cosplay. The trick is to be cognizant of your own appearance, don't just pick a character you like.
So, what do people actually do at cons. I wanna know more about the people who don't cosplay anything. What do you do? It seems like you'd be out of place if you don't cosplay at all.

Any good convention will have arcades, merchandise vendors, special shows and meetups during the day and different organized parties to go to at night. If you're going to a small town convention then its really just a place to hang out and socialize with other people for a day.

My main concern is that this is a teenage thing. I literally cannot comprehend how so people below 20 are even capable of having this as a hobby, yet that seems to be the majority of cosplayers. If were 14-18 I could never get away with spending hundreds of dollars on clothes/travel/hotels and just expect my parents to be cool with it. Hell I'm starting my first real job and I'm looking at the potential expenses and dreading it. It's just seems strange to me that so many young people cosplay and then stop around the age when they theoretically be able to actually afford the hobby. When I ask for good places to cosplay, I constantly get told to go halfway across the country instead of just going to local cons.
How the fuck do so many teenagers get away with this? Is it just a shitty parents thing? I could never imagine just letting my daughter/son go to some convention far away and just board up and hang around a bunch of weirdos while dressed as a slutty anime and then throw them a grand to do so.
