Is Journey THE most overrated/pretentious game to exist?
>no content
>2 hours long

inb4 "YOU DON'T GET IT"
>>
Anon, it's not about the content. It's about the journey.
>>
>>340003097

But Anon, you don't get it
>>
Played through twice, once fresh collecting all the pieces by exploring and once as a white, guiding the others.

It wasn't this amazing artistic journey or anything but I enjoyed it, the music was great, the atmosphere was comfy, and all around I enjoyed the experience. If I didn't have disposable income I might be more sour about the length but not being a NEET made it no big deal.
>>
Worst """game""" I ever has the misfortune of """playing""" - and that's not a hyperbole. I feel scammed.
>>
I thought it was a cool little game. I'm glad the remastered it because I didn't get to play it when it came out on PS3. I think you are missing a lot of the charm if you are not playing with other people.
>>
I loved it, it was a great experience. It's just a different kind of game, and that's fine. Everything looks and sounds beautiful, and the limited interaction didn't get in the way of the simple communication you needed. Probably one of my favourite games.

Flower is awesome too
>>
>>340003097
>pretentious
I don't think you know what that means. The game doesn't try to be anything more that it is.
I liked it. Had a great journey with another guy.
>>
>>340003097
>pretentious
>attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.

Wouldn't you agree it was the player base that went cockballs over it and try to over-explain every fucking detail they think the game is trying to communicate to them that are pretentious, and not the game itself?

If it went out of its way to exclaim why it was better than other games, I'd agree. But it didn't.
>>
You dare question fuher Sony ?
>>
>>340003097
>>340005327
I've never seen anyone trying to dismiss hate about the game with YOU DON'T GET IT.

I agree it wasn't much of a normal video game, more like an interesting experience, but I've literally made everyone who's ever been over my house play it, including my parents and they all loved it, this is around a dozen different people we are talking about.
>>
>>340003097
Loved it for what it is. Granted it loses it's charm by the third time you play it but I really did enjoy my first time with a bro in there and I believe everybody should experience this game at least once.

I do agree it is too expensive for what it is. I would pay 5-8 bucks max for it (and that's what i did when I got the physical copy that also includes flow and flower)
>>
Achievements that force you to not play the game for a week are retarded.

But hey, being retarded is what sony does best.
>>
>>340003097
But it's about the experience

I bet you watched it on youtube
>>
The unfinished swan is better
>>
>>340003097
>no content
Except, y'know, the two hours of content you talk about immediately after this point.
>2 hours long
So?
>no replay value
It has collectibles. Replay value is relative anyway.

The only thing you don't get is the meaning of the word "pretentious."
>>
>>340007258
Let's be honest, anon.

You weren't playing Journey for a full week.

>>340008179
It's really not.
I mean, I enjoyed it.

But it was like, just alright. I was really interested in it when I saw the trailer, and the finished game felt kind of underwhelming.
>>
It's hard for me to express how much I don't "get" this game. The adoration for it is like some kind of meme/joke that I'm not in on.

It has two basic mechanics (collect scarf pieces to jump higher; hide from snakes). The platforming is trivial and the stealth/snake sections occur only twice. People shit on Ride to Hell and Aliens: Colonial Marines, but at least those two games allow you to interact with the gameworld in some way more than pushing forward on the analog stick.

"It's more powerful when you experience it with someone else" - what's the point if there is absolutely no way to interact? Literally *any* other co-op game does co-op better. Steam Early Access Zombie Survival Game #687 is a more impressive bonding experience than this.

How did thathackcompany manage to create an interactive experience lacking both gameplay and a narrative, make it such a slog to play that even at <2 hours it overstays its welcome, then manage to con people into paying $15 for it?!
>>
Journey is utter trash. It didn't even last long enough for me to react to how shit it was and stop playing before the game was over.

No, I don't get it.
>>
>>340009308
As autistic as /v/ is I find it hard to believe you have trouble understanding things like aesthetics, cinematic style, and general "feel" aspects of a game. Is Journey the greatest game of all time? Absolutely not. And you don't have to like it, either. Different people like different things. But unless you're really on the spectrum, don't start acting like you're incapable of understanding why people might see appeal in a casual walking sim "experience" game.
>>
>>340009308
>People shit on Ride to Hell and Aliens: Colonial Marines, but at least those two games allow you to interact with the gameworld in some way more than pushing forward on the analog stick.
But those games are also broken and poorly executed.

Journey is neither of those things, that's a critical difference.

>what's the point if there is absolutely no way to interact?
You can chirp to each other.

The point of the multiplayer was based on a concept of cooperation without communication.
And you don't see the other players' names in order to make it more seamless. Other players can come and go and you may never know the difference. My first playthrough I had something like four different partners and I have no idea when one of them left and another joined.

Journey's coop integration is sort of like 4chan in that way, so surely you can understand that part.

>lacking both gameplay
But what about the part where you play the game, i.e. 98% of the time the game is open
>and a narrative
This part is served through the few cutscenes with the big white cloaked one, where they show you a mural of the world's past
>a slog to play
What?

If you want to play Journey you will like Journey. If you want to play something else, and play Journey, you've made a mistake. If someone wants to like it the best thing to do is accept it.
>>
>>340005720
If you and your family/friends loved it, that's fine. I despise the crowed the shove this or any other game in your face though like it's the hottest shit to come out of the gaming industry.
>>
>>340003097
i played it last night, it's a great game.

go watch the gdc talk the designer gave, you can really appreciate why things are the way they are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGCkVHSvjzM
>>
>>340003097
I picked it up for $5 and got a few hours worth of entertainment and a pretty unique multiplayer experience out of it. That's better than most $60 games.
>>
>>340009660
>As autistic as /v/ is I find it hard to believe you have trouble understanding things like aesthetics, cinematic style, and general "feel" aspects of a game
Said in the same board that calls out modern gaming as being too cinematic
>>
I liked it, but I can't see paying more than $5 for it.
It was a beautiful interactive movie. I thought if you played through it more you'd discover more paths. But once I finished it twice in the same routine, I gave up.

I recently got a ps3. If it too late to buy Journey and play it cause the ship has sailed cause everyone has moved on?
>>
>>340015769
Both times I played through it, I met two people.
It depends on if you're fine with taking things in with gorgeous landscapes. I thought the idea was cool. Walking up a light-snowing area near a mountain and I see another character walk by. Two people in a desolate world wandering.
In a sense, the rare sight of another player can be just as interesting.
>>
>>340003097
It's literally a walking simulator.

I'm inclined to agree. All the newfags love it though despite the fact that Galaxy games play like linear gimmicky shits.
>>
>>340015769
Search for the collection, you'll feel less ripped off since the thing of Journey is playing cooperative without knwoing who the other person is. At least you'll also play Flower and flOW, wich are a bit more interesting

>tfw finding your bro frozen corpse on the mountain

he was a good bro
>>
>>340016025
>>340016386
Damn sounds like I missed out, but it still might be ok.
>>
>>340003097
I didn't think it was pretentious at all. It was neat to explore a world with absolutely no context and no way to really communicate with a stranger when you did bump into one. I felt like I had a bond to the people I was with.

dat snowy mountain part ;_;

You know another game that is just really boring and lacks any kind of content? The stanley parable. Basically all you do is walk around and click some things and listen to the narrator.
>>
>>340003097
It's a perfectly paced game in my opinion that delivers on its promise of being an emotional game.
>>
>>340009308
Clearly it's not your type of game. It's fine for you not to like it, but it's good for what it is.
>>
>>340015760
>>
>>340003097
Naw. I only played it once but on my first playthrough someone helped walk me through the whole game. I got really, really emotional at the end. It might be somewhat pretentious and overrated but no other medium has made me have such an intense emotional reaction without using words and only in the span of 2 hours.
>>
The scarf mechanic is a stroke of genius. By exploiting the players' egos it makes exploring/collecting incredibly rewarding and getting hit incredibly punishing.

First time I played it I didn't realize there was a real person controlling the other character.
It may not be the most fun/replayable game ever, but it was the best gaming experience I've ever had.

MFW when I haven't seen a single person in all journey and in title credits there was at least 4 players whom I supposedly "met". What the fuck? I remember even waiting for a while just so I can find another player.

It's a rip off. I didn't hear separate ways once.
