It's a poor RPG for the reasons that will be no doubt posted non stop in this thread. But it's honestly a pretty solid game as far as exploration combat etc goes. I got 100 hours out of vanilla and I look forward to getting another 100 when there are enough gun porn mods to satisfy me properly.

It's more of the same from Fallout 3 but more roleplay aspects have been gutted to make it more casual friendly. If you really liked Fallout 3, it's worth a play through and no matter how much shitty writing the game has, the world is always fun to explore.
They've made it an FPS with minor RPG elements and your actions have no consequences whatsoever. If that sounds like it appeals to you, go for it.

Just wait. It's the standard Bethesda fair, just shinier and shallower. The DLC has been overall underwhelming and there's still more to come. There aren't many revolutionary mods, mechanically or visually. New features add little substantial or compelling gameplay options and seem misguided at best. Survival mode would be nice, but it's absolutely hamstrung by fast travel removal and its ridiculous save system. Just wait for them to do a GotY/Legendary/Ultimate edition.

I kind of liked the settlement stuff even though it was shallow as hell. Everything else was shit, not even mediocre but this is /v/ so I say shit, I mean legitimately fucking awful.
Gunplay is braindead unless you play on the highest difficulty, in which case naked raiders tank shotgun blasts to the face point-blank. Writing is awful even by Bethesda standards. RPG stuff is almost gone, your character options for character builds will pretty much be 'hit or shoot,' with the only variety coming from garbage perks that just give you arbitrary stat-increases meaning that you rape everything late-game with one kind of weapon that does 200% damage because apparently the FO4 MC has ork magic or something so he can do more damage with a pipe-rifle than a 44. revolver or a plasma pistol. And the weapons and armor are pathetic after New Vegas, they're pretty much all just static jumps in quality along a couple of different lines and they all look like shit. The system of modifying your stuff with new parts was a decent idea but with armor you'll always just use what's strongest (strongest armor looks like a toilet) and with guns it doesn't even matter because sooner or later you're bound to pull a legendary double-shot combat shotgun out of the ass of a 'legendary' bloatfly at which point you might as well activate godmode.

I had fun with the game because the weapon modification system, while rudimentary, provided for some exciting moments earlier in the game as I stumbled across new weapons and learned to maximize their functionality quickly in order to guarantee survival. The settlement system, while in need of some fixes in terms of Garvey's constant quests, allowed for a great level of creative expression and both literal and metaphorical world-building. The revamped monster designs and modes of attack did a great job of making the shooting feel immediate and dangerous, especially on the revamped survival difficulty.

Fallout 4 is super neato to the max, brah. You can, like, build stuff like guns and houses and stuff and shoot dudes with guns you built. Radical to the max! Better? Or do you think it needs copious amounts of swears to make it sound 'authentic'? If it sounds soulless, it's only because the game engages but never really moves past that point. A few gorgeous vistas, some really stellar enemy designs, particularly the new way that even common enemies like ghouls are an actual threat in groups due to their speed, but it all boils away after awhile and you're left with settlement building and connecting the dots of the linear story, so unless the looting and settlements float your boat, it doesn't compel in the same way that its most immediate predecessor did. Plus a lot of the weapon designs are atrocious. The 10mm's hammer doesn't fall, but the revolvers both do. The AR has no bolt to speak of and no charging handle that's ever operated despite the shotgun and 'combat rifle' both having visible bolts and charging handles.

As a longtime fan who buys literally every iteration of 'The Bethesda RPG' they release and plays each and every one of them to death.
Fuck no. Serious case of buyer's remorse and haven't bothered with the DLC myself. It's so half-finished it's not funny. There's next to no quests, the main quest is boring and cliche as fuck, the big draw of the settlement system is beyond half assed and barely works, and all the depth and complexity has been stripped out. Of course, it's VERY PRETTY and I know that's all most people seem to give a fuck about, so if that's you're thing go for gold. And it does, at least, manage to finally get the whole 'being a shooter' thing right, what with recoil indicator crosshairs, grenade hotkeys, sprint, ect. But the kinda person who gets into it will be the kinda person who prefers CoD to Fallout games.
