Starter edition sucks dick. You get 6 operators to start then each after costs 12.5k to unlock. Go compare, the DLC operators cost 15k to unlock. On the FAQ page, Ubi states that it will take 15 hrs of gameplay go unlock just 1 operator.

$15 unlocks 4 operators, but it takes 10x as long to unlock any other operator as a regular player. You have to grind for approximately 48 hours just to unlock one operator.

It doesn't take that long. I bought the starter edition today, unlocked 4 operators with renown and now I still have 7k left. You get ~200 renown per match which usually are like 8 minutes long. It's pretty decent and I haven't even done the situations yet.
What really kills it is that it also scales up shop prices for skins. You need like 50k to unlock some shit. They're not even good looking.

I honestly do recommend this game to everyone. I too was extremely skeptic about playing a ubishit game but this one if very well done and has a decent skill ceiling. I traded some anon in a steam trade thread for a copy of DaS ll that I had in my inventory for over a year and I haven't stopped playing since. I have yet to git gud but it is intense as fuck. Can't go wrong for $15

Its fun to have choice, to have some arbitrary limit on how much fun you can have before you have to start grinding is shit game design.
There shouldnt even fucking be locked characters, they locked thing you grind should have been cosmetics and guns.
