I actually remember buying this game in a store when it came. I was fifteen years old and I was excited as all hell. I was surprised at how good and smooth it played on my shitty PC compared to the piece of shit Doom 3 from the year before.
My entire playthrough was the best few hours in my entire life.
Then Ep1 and 2 came out and they didn't really live up to HL2 and I stopped giving a fuck.

I was probably more hyped than anyone on this board for Half-Life 2 but when I played it I was bitterly disappointed. You could see how clueless they were about design particularly towards the end of the game when it became nothing but the gravity gun, like an admission they fucked up the gunplay. What really killed it for me was being locked in rooms while the AI talked

I played Sly 1 and 2, honestly I don't think 2's open world really improved the game, although it did give it a fairly unique atmosphere compared to the original (which was pretty much identical to most ps2 platoformers)
None of the guns are particularly satisfying to shoot, the vehicle sections and boss battles suck, a lot of the levels drag on far too much, and the story is fairly mediocre for the most part.
The Gravity Gun, Ravenholm, prison level, visuals, and Dog/Alex are pretty good though.
It's okay, won't make my top ten though.

2 was my first Sly, though I went back and played 1 and it felt much more conventional, in terms of both gameplay and story.
In retrospect, Sly 2 actually got pretty intense, Prague gave me legit chills.

I'll admit I found certain parts of the boat section annoying my first time through, but the buggy was comfy as fuck. One of the stops was the bridge so that's great too.
As for the story, it's like with the first game: the actual plot is pretty simple, but the setting hints at a lot of shit in the background. The Combine are fucking enormous and something's clearly going on with them, but we'll never see Episode 3 so whatever.

Games were fresh and innovative, the source engine opened up possibility that we'd only dreamed of. The modding potential was unlimited and games like Gary's Mod redefined what we could do with the physics of the game, only limited by our imagination
Source was the gaming renaissance and we'll never experience anything like it ever again
