That's the thing. Mac is about reading the opponent and playing him like you're boxing. If I can't figure out what to do in the first round, I use that as an opportunity to study the opponent. I can generally start anticipating their efforts in subsequent fights.
I'll admit I was annoyed the first time around because it felt like I was being deprived of a fight. I'm getting better at not letting fights get to me anymore.
Anyone I go up against can try to test my patience with whatever they want. I WILL eventually find a way around it.

That's another thing. Because Mac's actual tool set is pretty limited, every competent Mac needs to learn how to use every little thing in his arsenal to get the edge. Adaptability makes or breaks any Mac. If you're flexible when you play as him, you've got a shot. Otherwise, pick someone else.
Also, playing as Mac is mental, not just striving to perfect how you play him. I've adopted a mentality of never giving up, no matter how grim the situation. I have a staunch aversion to killing myself as quickly as possible when I know I'm going to die. Other Macs do it and it bugs the fuck out of me.
I know this next part is stupid, butI always play like Doc Louis is watching. What's more is that I occasionally start channeling Rocky vibes and pound my chest when I start getting confident because I loved that movie Creed so goddamn much.
