layers of fear is pretty good. it's not terribly scary but it's got some spooks and looks good

I was a big fan of horror games, but I think I'm immune now to any types of spooky stuff. Literally played Alien: Isolation and Soma without flinching (and the last time I was genuinely horrified by the game was playing Penumbra 1,2, and during the night sequences of Scratches)

New Londo in DkS 1 is really spooky if youre playing a blind run. Dementium is also pretty spooky. Fallout 4 when playing against the ghouls can be scary too. The fishing village in Bloodborne is kinda scary. And some parta sin TLOU are spoopy too. TL;DR, horror games are dead. The only salvation is a new Silent Hills type game and the RE: Remakes

yeah, killed (or rather "temporarily knocked-out" as trends keep coming around) swifly by micro-transactions wide audience appeal (from AAA side) and popularity of running simulators with no means to self-defence (thanks to stupid fucks, who decided to cut the gameplay mechanics w/o any substitution for Penumbra ep.2)

Agree, whats the point of playing a bitch character that cant fight back? Imagine RE4 without guns or knives. Just León running around like a pussy.

The horror genre has unironically become literally Lebbit these days. Search Youtube for 'creepy stories' or even 'horror' in general and you get some chad cuck narrating 'I'M NEEEEW TO THIS SUB BUT I WANNA TELL MY EXPERIENCE' and they ALL end up the same generic crap of home invasion or skinwalkers told over and over. What the hell happened?

Anyone else unironically looking forward to Sister Location?
>>
>>339954181
so, the Ashley sequence? but even there you could harm and slow-down the enemies with the environment - that shit was really intense

So, i guess, if running away from enemy could be balanced with environmental actions (like knock-off a chair or throw a book or somethin), where you would frantically need to decide, whether it's better to just run or find something around to slow the chaser down with - it would be slightly more tolerable.

Would you classify spec ops as a horror game?
It's not environmentally dark nor are there monsters (well non-human monsters)
Less scary monster horror , more human horror

Also playing Dark souls games blind is better horror then most horror games

There's a terrible meme that says for games to be scary the player can't have any means of defending themselves.

This makes the games fucking unfun and not scary because being defenseless is FORCED.

It would perhaps be better to have a game where you CAN defend yourself against some threats, and much less against others.

Giving the player a sense of confidence and control only to abruptly take it away is a good way to invoke feelings of anxiety and uneasiness.
>>
>>339955332

>>
>>339955852
It's not scary when done repeatedly and when it's the main (or worse, only) way in which the game attempts to scare you.

If the game is full of jumpscares, they quickly become predictable and you get used to them.

It's clear you have no understanding of suspense and didn't play a lot of horror games in your life, so please refrain from talking about them like you know anything.

it hits a solid five hour wall of unnecessary tedium when the alien is gone and you're stuck with the stupid robots

Honestly the best thing about the game is how absorbed you feel in the world of Alien, everything is so unbelievably detailed and it's got that awesome 70's / 80's sci-fi aesthetic.
>>
>>339956275
I like it IMO
It should of been shorter then it was but its good and the androids are a butch
Play it on hardest difficulty , the alien actually presues you through many of levels and learns very quickly

Hardly. The game doesn't try to scare you in any way except for gore and jumpscares.

I started playing Dead Island recently and between the really fantastic (indoor) environments, how weak your character is, and the fucked up not quite 3D sound I've been getting spooked quite a bit. Even though it's a really silly arcadey game it's pretty tense when you can't tell if the growling is coming from one zombie or half a dozen hidden out of sight and everything is pitch black with flickering lights casting spooky shadows.

What is with this sudden surge of people pushing that shitty movie?

Coppola's Dracula sucks ass. Its tone is inconsistent, its casting is horrific outside of Gary Oldman, the design is very hit or miss, and it doesn't even follow the book that well at all despite being called Bram Stoker's Dracula. Even Browning's movie was closer to the book.
>>
>>339952927

SOMA was a pretty atmospheric game. It had neat environments to explore and some of the later segments on the seabed were quite unnerving. However, the real horror value lies in the game's themes. One of the only other times I've seen similar concepts discussed in the same environment as videogames was the whole mario double cherry webm fiasco

I don't know if it's just me but if a game isn't explicitly horror then it doesn't matter how genuinely tense and lethal the gameplay is, it will never scare me. People always talk about how so-and-so game could be considered horror because of how tense it is but I'm not sure they're the same.

>>
>>339962587
>Outlast's chase moments are definitely scarier than Fatal Frame's spooky Pokemon Snap combat moments
Yeah it's pretty scary to be chased by psychopaths who are at least 2 times slower than a guy holding a camera and who can't figure out how a fucking door knob works.

I can't be scared when I'm literally bursting into laughter each time they knock the door down rather than open it.
>>
>>339960728
The one thing I feel Fishing Hamlet fucked up badly was that despite a ton of cool, creepy as fuck enemies, great atmosphere (that whispering Fishman at the start was a masterful opening) and amazing design...

They just reskinned the dogs as an enemy.

They already did that with the fucking goddamn dobermans at the start, do we really need MORE exact dog clones? Every enemy besides them is great and fun but WHY?

There's only like 3 anyway..
>>
>>339963115
It is scary. I know I laughed at a couple of Outlast's jump scares. Retard jumping out of wheelchair and absurdly loud hanging guy come to mind. Outlast is good because of the quiet moments. Like when you lose your camera or when the creepy priest guy approaches you when Lobster Man throws you out of that window. I think I've laughed at every survival horror game I've ever played. That doesn't make them not scary. My main point is that jump scares are fun and are good in horror games. I think they're what make Fatal Frame good.
>>
>>339954765
>>339955054
both of you faggots are wrong. amnesia was a good game but it was still worse than frictional's penumbra series. somehow though, my guess is LP'ers, amnesia got a shitload of attention and frictional just keeps putting out worse and worse games.
SOMA had boring puzzles that were next to insulting, the story could have been interesting but everytime it got close to something good it just dropped whatever momentum it had. it just kinda laid out the basics of existentialism and what defines a person, be it soul, body or a mix of both, and doesn't do anything with it or take it further.
the enemies were boring as hell past the first encounter and most could be avoided just by looking into a corner whenever they come around. not to mention when you do "die" you just go unconscious and walk with a gait of a war vet for a bit after you wake up.
exploration was another thing they could have done a lot with and instead they just let it sit and did nothing with it. exploring the areas outside the zones on the ocean floor would have been perfect for little scares or easter eggs, anything interesting and I only found one thing that was even close to a reward for walking around it wasn't even far off the regular path. each area and went around and slowly walked around to each corner and in-between trying to find something hidden or interesting and in each area I was let down.

the game is just a let down in so many ways, and yet there who don't know shit about horror that are trying to give it a lot of undeserved praise. it wasn't a terrible game, but it certainly wasn't good either. the ending was decent though, easily the best part of the game which is rare for a horror title.
>>
>>339959547
>One of the only other times I've seen similar concepts discussed in the same environment as videogames was the whole mario double cherry webm fiasco
Talos principle did it much better and flushed it out past the core concepts. it's also completely optional as an aside to the gameplay, and it gets you to take a school or idea of philosophical thought in-game and actually try and defend it while staying consistent as the game tries to find flaws in your answers.
>>
>>339963593
>I think I've laughed at every survival horror game I've ever played
Well you are doing something wrong then.

Not even trying to insult you or adress your point or anything but immersion is probably the most important aspect of horror games, I would even say it's more important than in RPGs. So it's really counter-productive to play them without immersing yourself.

I hope you always play at night in the complete dark, alone, with headphones and ideally when no one else is at your home. No other way to do that, otherwise it's like watching a comedy on a funeral.
>>
>>339965521
I do. That's why I really can't play the Whistleblower DLC. Hearing buzzsaw guy behind me paralyzes me.

Maybe I just laugh at a lot of things. I know when Rose said she was pregnant in MGS2 I laughed and said "oh no" even though it was really sad.
