can someone explain something to me?

ive had my rift on back order for a bit now, it should come in "august"

apparently they started selling them at best buy, or so ive heard, but according to their website they are completely sold out in every store? am i reading this wrong?

plus i had my order cancelled because apparently your shipping address needs to mach your BILLING address exactly, which means i need to send it to my house in NY and have it shipped by someone i know to my current location in VA, which is fucking retarded.

do they have them in best buy or not, because i will drive there right now and pick one up.
>>
seriously it blows my mind right now that oculus can fuck up so much that its impossible to get a consumer product months after its release.

buying a DK2 was more easy than this
>>
>>339938075

They underestimated the hype. It's the same with the Vive. Both received way more preorders than they expected and have issues actually fulfilling all the orders in time.
>>
>>339938704
>way more preorders than they expected
This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
The preorders exist so that they can gauge demand.
The preorders tell them how many to expect.

They still fucked up.
>>
Why would anyone buy a Rift over a Vive?

I mean, I'm not getting either, but if I was going to shell out this much money for a headset, might as well pay an extra couple hundred to get proper room-scale VR.
>>
>>339938897
Why would anyone buy into the VR gimmick? It's like Wii 2.0
>>
>>339938897
If I was going to get one I would buy Sony VR to minimize the buyer's remorse, learn my lesson and move on with my life.
>>
>>339938897
Oculus is cheaper and some people lack room space. That said I've heard that Vive is better even without the room but I can't really confirm it.

>>
>>339939729

Nice argument.
>>
>>339939218
It's more of a Kinect thing. Some people probably don't care about room VR or motion controllers and Vive doesn't have a cheaper alternative without those things. I can see them enhancing the experience but for someone who is only interested in 3d waifus a controller is enough.
>>

Rift is gonna have room scale once they release the touch controllers which come with another sensor.

VR is pretty hard to explain to those who haven't tried it.

Think of your screen as a window. No matter how big it may be, you're still outside, looking in. With VR, you're inside the action. You can look up, down and right behind you and you'd still be in the scene.

On top of that the 3D is 1:1 with your pupil distance, so objects have a correct feeling of scale. It's called 'presence' and actually fools your brain into thinking it's real. People instinctively duck and back away from things.

It's better in game engines but video can be good if it's set just right.

>>

>If you have tried it you wasted money
Sounds reasonable.
>>
>>339942264
Not him, but I have both.

Ocuclus only has the advantage of drm locked games and cheaper price. Vive's room scale is so much better that I'll never touch the Rift again. Already have it on ebay.
>>
>>339942264
Let me try to break it down.

As far as screen and resolution is concerned both rift and vive use the same screens. 2 screens, one for each eye at the same resolution. One can argue the rift lenses are marginally better and the image quality is slightly more crisp, however I think I prefer the vive in this area because the field of view is wider and higher.

Both headsets are comfortable. The rift is a bit more comfortable but the vive isn't not comfortable either.

Now where things get interesting is the software/ecosystem. Since the vive uses steam, it's more fleshed out and customizable. The oculus storefront is complete garbage. I'm talking, no ability to sort, return, or search for software. Plus the vive ecosystem feels like this community of experimentation where there is so much more available from small operations just feeling out the ecosystem since it's so new. Yeah this means there is a bit more garbage but some of it is so interesting and compelling. I could make a list 20 games long of must play games for the vive but only 3 games long for the rift

Vive has the controllers, which add so much to the experience, it's almost likeep trying to explain vr to someone again. It adds so much more immersion. Yes, oculus is coming out with touch, but we don't know when and how much it will cost. Vive offers the experience now. Plus oculus is acting like Apple and trying to lock down their ecosystem. It's bullshit and if I had to back one horse for the future it would be valve/steam not oculus.

This was kind of disjointed if you have specific questions let me know.
>>
>>339942264
Not him, but also have both. Vive's controllers really add to the immersion and interaction. Roomscale and walking around is cool for the few games that actually confine the game to your area. Rift can do the walking around to a small extent as well, but you really miss having your hands and the full room.

When it comes to sitting down stuff though, the Rift crushes the Vive, I don't know how people say it's the same. It's way more comfortable, lighter, and has built in headphones which doesn't matter that much when you are walking around, but when you are getting comfy playing ETS2, Elite Dangerous, DCS, or any vehicle sim, it's so much better. I've also had more framerate issues with the Vive compared to the Rift.

If you are interested in VR get the Vive, only if you are only interested in specific sim games should you get the Rift.
>>
>>339943092
I am him and this is pretty true. I wouldn't say it CRUSHES the vive, but yeah the rift is more comfortable for seated experiences.
>>
>>339941568
Yep. Seems you can emote really well with those.
>>

>That said I've heard that Vive is better even without the room but I can't really confirm it.

I haven't heard that. I've actually heard that the Rift headset itself is more comfortable and the image quality is better (though the later is barely noticeable). once the controllers are out it'll really come down to how much you care about room scale.
I would personally get a Vive because I'd like to at least have the option of moving around, and the headset thing seems to be a case of the Rift being slightly better rather than the vive being bad.
>>
>>339944625
Yes, it plays better on the Rift though, because Frontier often fucks up.
>>
>>339944909
Different titles handle collisions differently. Some have the hands collide with the object and obey the simulation, others have them remain tied to controller position and respect the user input. It's immersion breaking either way but which is better tends to be a user preference thing.
>>
>>339944909
Exactly what you think would happen. VR porn is shit. It was fun for a week, then I just went back to regular porn.

You can see the hand clipping through slightly there. I think in Surgeon Simulator the hands stick but a ghost image of the hand's bones representing your real hands can be seen through objects
I think this was at an adult expo so anyone there could try it.

>>
>>339950569
Okay, let me clear this up.

It wasn't the glasses that bothered people with 3D. It was the material. People have different eye-distance and some movies did a shitty job with the 3D effect that let people disliking it. Add to that, the glasses weren't perfect. They made things darker and sometimes one image would bleed into the other.

VR uses either a split screen or two dedicated to each eye, using the players personal eye-distance. It's perfect 3D. Add the fact that you can look around and wearing a headset seems worth it.

I have to say that every naysayer I've talked to IRL that thinks VR is a gimmick has actually never tried room scale VR yet, typically they've only tried Gear VR.

The difference is drastic. They come out of the experience with a huge smile on their face and can't believe that they've been in there for an hour or two.

It's only going to get better from here.

wanna replace your old lightbuld with a 10times more expensive one that lasts about as long?
At least I save 1/5th of its price in reduced energy bill, and the bill for heating up the house is higher but who cares, the new lightbulbs are new!
>>
>>339954494

What. How dumb are you that you cant even read a chart? A 50$ LED lightbulb will save you up to 8$ a year, for 15 to 25 years.

Where you have to buy a new 3$ bulb every year that cost 12$ to run.

Come on.

Nobody wants to spend $800 for more in depth wagglin

What I want one of these headsets for is more immersion in first person games with traditional controls, like how it was originally marketed.. That is it. That is all. I dont want to stand in a little square and waggle around. I would gladly pay around $300 for just the headset for this purpose.

Not all games have to use them but they're everything that motion controls were supposed to be. Just look at any playthrough of Job Simulator. They're your own two hands, interacting directly with the environment.

Except that the whole package of the Vive is still better than the Oculus at doing what you described.

copy pasting from the dead thread since I find the question interesting as a potential buyer:

So does the HTC VR gimmick wear off fast? the games themselves are honestly mediocre as fuck and doesn't seem like anything that would last more than a week of amusement, at most? had it been with a normal controller. Nothing that can really hook you for a long time to make it worth dropping 800 bucks.

It's the VR gimmick itself that hooks you in, but you would get over the awe of it after a week or so? you're not going to be impressed forever like it was the first time putting it on. Idk, man. Hover Junkers seems like the only game that could even keep you around since it's FPS multiplayer, though it seems fairly barebones as a game itself.

>poor!
No matter how much $ you have, why buy something that will be brushed aside in two weeks? having money doesn't give you a free pass to toss it into the toilet, man.
