Awful SDK, no Workshop, custom maps didn't give you Exp for progression, no in-game downloading from servers.
All those things literally murdered the game before it had any chance.

Which may or may not be inspired by Alien Breed, it certainly didn't invent top down shooters.

I was talking about Alien Swarm.
You said it was similar to Helldivers, it isn't though.
You need a lot of precision and fast directional aiming while moving which a controller can't offer.

Teslas won against everything and I found it made the game boring.
I'm really disappointed because I loved the cooperation between randoms I'm still looking for some sort of successor. I thought it'd take off but then noticed getting new maps was a giant hassle.

Don't fall for the Helldivers meme. The gameplay is solid but the map generation pool is really small. Every map is randomly generated but feels exactly the damn same.
Also it's a huge pain in the ass to play co-op since it was designed as a couch console co-op game, so every player shares the same screen. Even on PC. It's incredibly frustrating.

What killed Helldivers for me was the lack of interior maps. The corridor streets of the Super Earth city in the map you get when you are about to lose a campaign comes close, but it's still not perfect.
