The levels in this game are all a scripted, boring mess.

Compare to the original trilogy. Once you get to the end of a level, you could go all the way back in almost all levels. You could explore them and find secrets at your own pace.

DKCR has a bunch of scripted shit that prohibits you from going back. This makes collecting all of the shitload of collectibles they scattered a complete fucking chore and everytime I replay a level and go through that scripted shit I want to kill myself.

It doesn't help there's so many fucking collectibles. Compared to 2 - 3 bonus coins and a hero coin in the other games, 8 pices of a shitty pineaple puzzle and kong letters counting for % is just too much.

Then there's the issue of variety. After the 10th beach or cave level I wanted to turn off the console and stop playing altogether. And the rehashed soundtrack got boring fast.

The bosses are stupid too and the overworld, which was lively and just as fun to explore as the levels were in the original games, is reduced to a new mario bros. style thing.

I really hate this game.

I really liked how most of the worlds had a transition from the previous world in the first level, and the world setting gets more concentrated (or something) as you progress. Like how the factory starts out kind of dilapitated, overgrown and with daylight shining through broken brick walls. By the end, you're in the most preserved parts of it with crazy technology everywhere.

I played this type of stuff when I was a kid, and even now as a 26 year old that art still looks great, so why is Nintendo so set on using an art style made for toddlers. There's no other way to say it really, their new style looks so fucking shoddy and childish.
None of the games I played as a kid looked all that childish, so why do modern day Nintendo games go that route?

Again, not trying to cause a shitstorm, I'm just annoyed every time I think about it.

Part of me really wants to blame 3D. 3D is still fucking ugly. I've always preferred 2D, and even now I still love the aesthetic of a well made 2D game.

Destiny. No I'm not kidding. It has god-tier level DESIGN. But they ruined it for the player by putting invisible walls and mission specific doors everywhere.

This takes quite a while to realize, but any given "level" (planet) has a ton of shortcuts and connections between areas. They just don't open them up except in missions, and one at a time. Additionally if you could jump over platforms the levels would be fucking fantastic and again much more connected. And these platforms seem to be placed there for that precise purpose, most of them are just the right height to get on top of.

The way the game is designed I am 100% sure it was originally intended to be much more open ended per area. A fucking shame what they did to it.

Wooly World was a bizarrely fantastic game, considering the current state of Nintendo.
