Kinda mediocre company. Of the two games of theirs I've played, shantae risky's revenge and mighty switch force, I didn't find either particularly interesting or fun. I remember the art being kinda nice in them but nothing else stuck out to me. I question if they're only popular here as most people just jerk off to shantaewhich I admit I do.

I think its pretty funny that shovel knight was made by ex-wayforward devs and its easily superior to anything wayforward has ever made. I wonder why that is.
Pirate's Curse was definitely their best game so far but it still suffered from too much backtracking and awkward unfun combat. Hoping the next one is a step up in both those regards. Pretty great character designs and music though.

Bad at everything else (gameplay, challenge level mostly). Shantae:PC was their best game but it's only fun on Risky Mode in my opinion. Otherwise it is just too slow and you don't spend enough time fully decked out in the pirate gear, which is going away for HGH anyway. I probably won't even get HGH unless it's on sale, unless they do something amazing with the transformations it looks like the same old stuff.
I do like their games though, they have a lot of charm. I feel like they're a company that makes games because they genuinely enjoy making games, but because of that they have to stay afloat making tons of shovelware.
They have great talent on their team but they're a missing a piece of the puzzle, if they fill it in I think they could make some god-tier, 10/10 games.

No, he's pretty much right. PC's level design is just as bad as RR's was, the only difference is that they went and split the game world up into a bunch of small islands, which makes exploring even less fun because of how massively disconnected everything feels. And then there's shit like that race section with Rottytops, which while kind of fun on its own, totally fucks up the flow of a metroidvania, especially when you have to backtrack through it later for more items you can't reach the first time.
I have no idea how Wayforward has been able to keep afloat all these years making retro platformers but I don't care.
I own their rare DS games and there's nothing you can do about it.

I just don't get why they're so insistent on this quasi metroidvania type thing with all the backtracking. The system shovel knight had where you have a series of linear levels with a boss at the end, each with its own theme and game mechanics unique to that stage, that are interconnected by towns and bonus stages for you to cool down between levels so the game doesn't feel too monotonous. They really should follow that style for their games in the future I think, really I don't know why after castlevania sotn came out everyone seemed to forget that castlevania 3 was a good system, worthy of refinement too.

The trailer is pretty fucking bad, the game looks better than it is.
For what it sets out to do, it's alright.
Like all WF games the charm mostly comes from the gag writing and art. The trailer didn't show that it (strangely) has full voice acting, the character portraits are animated and have bantz while fighting.
But, the sprite for your character is really static, and makes the game look really freaking bad at first glance. Like there's a death animation, and a victory animation, but beyond that your skirt just kinda blows around and everything else is static, it looks REALLY bad.
It's probably really low budget considering it was a joke game made for Humble Monthly, but it has full voice acting (and it's not that bad), good art (but not animation) and good music. It's probably really short though, I only played it for ten minutes so I don't know how long it is.

I was thinking more of the MSF opinions but I also think PC is excellent. If you were the guy(s) talking about level design in PC I agree that it's not exceptional, but I didn't find it annoying or anything, and more to the point I found it a big step up from RR which is frankly as bland and seemingly thoughtless it gets in level design (and I say that even though I like RR).
Anyway, yeah, I think the game gets better in general as it goes on, but I'm not sure it'll matter if you're not already into the game.

to me it was a very generic and boring story that only got attention because it involved a lesbian so gaming journos could point to it and say look at how progressive we are! If it had been lgbt lit or an lgbt film with the same story it would have been completely ignored as the dull tripe that it was. I remember when playing it I imagined my player character rolling her eyes as she found all of her sister's SUPER SEKRIT diary entries just lying around all over the place when she went home to get her car keys. I would have forgiven the game if the ending was your character calling up her sister on her cell phone and telling her not to do that shit again.
If you wish to pare down the gameplay because it gets in the way of the true point of your art, which I would imagine is an emotional evocation, then fine. But Gone Home did not justify doing this at all because there was no emotional evocation, just boredom.

I don't even really like Gone Home that much for the story, but rather the way it's delivered (i.e. creeping around a spooky empty mansion that's packed with all sorts of personality and flavor text and a frankly absurd amount of detail at times).
I'll admit that the whole "oh no now she's joining the military but I wooove heeeer~" thing has been done a lot before but that's actually a thing that happens so I gave it a pass. the homo aspect doesn't really play into my feelings about the game at all but it's just that delivery method that blew me away.
if Gone Home had just been a Dear Esther-type that just dumped exposition on you with some spooky imagery (and I do like the imagery in Esther, to be fair), it would have been completely forgettable, but the fact that the story and characters were portrayed in a way that no film or book or song could have done is kind of what blew me away about it. I know that sort of thing has been done before but I think gone home is a pretty stellar example in that regard.

Yes, and those are fucking great developers, all things considered. Also, they're WAY bigger than WF, having woked on multiple tripleA games and having had their original stuff published by big companies like Sega and Nintendo, which means a lot more resources to work with and that's not the comparison I wanted to make here.
And they do have a special thing going on, which is style. I've said it already and I'll say it again: without their charming art and amazing music their games are more or less average, with a few exceptions for the better and quite a few for the worse.
And as a final point, I've known them since before I knew their original stuff. I was quite impressed with abahb before I knew about Shantae when I watched Matt's promotional material on WarioWare DIY, back in the day.
If I'm sounding a bit fanboyish it's possible that I made some exagerations for the sake of argument, but I genuinely enjoy their games enough for me to remember them and keep coming back for more, and that's more than I can say for most other companies.

The game didn't need to be ported. It was compatible with the GBA.
Actually porting it would again, be an issue with Wayforward, not Capcom. Kind of but in order to make it work they had to take some liberties with the initial concept.
Each genre of game is a different upgrade for your gun and each has varying amounts of effectiveness and utility (Dance Gun is only as strong as your inputs, RPG gun lets you heal, etc), it isn't exactly what was advertised by the gag but trying to do so would probably involve more multitasking than humanly possible, not even Desolate Hope reached that level of multitasking.
The game is being advertised as a "first taste", only having 3 stages to its name, this coupled with the final boss's statement about six more foes points to a full fledged game being in the pipeline.

With the main characters, and main antagonists, being female having a lesser focus on male characters makes sense. That said, there are still plenty of respectable male characters in the series.
