Bristol Ridge APU is on the 28nm node and as we know Polaris runs on the 14nm. There's no customized 28nm Polaris anywhere so maybe that's why Bristol Ridge was seen as "dead and old" meaning Nintendo abandoned it so they could get their hands on Polaris to use for their next console and it's new concept aka industry leading chips according to WSJ
So I guess it's why the hardware and software aren't ready for 2016 and news to be pushed to 2017 to be ready with games and hardware.
So I'm gonna assume with APU they're using something off of ARM, using some Puma+ waiting for some improvement on the Bristol Ridge APU again to see if it could shrink or just going balls deep into the Summit Ridge APU.

I guess they need anything they can get with this "new concept" for NX which is why they turned to Polaris. They don't usually chase fancy specs but only go for it if it fits the "gimmick" they're looking for or accidentally ending up with the most modern archeticture by releasing later like N64/Cube did.

Excavator cores are pretty bad from what i heard unless they improved on it with this updated Bristol Ridge APU
But they'd have to shrink the node to 14nm to run Polaris. To my knowledge Bristol Ridge APU even the updated one is still on 28nm.
So they either somehow managed to customize a 28nm Polaris chip which is pretty unlikely and expensive or they simply changed their mind on using Bristol Ridge which means Carrizo/Excavator are out.

Well I was just spitballing based on the power draw and the possible prices they could get and maybe that would make it appealing as an x86 option. If they went with a 28nm, I don't think they would use Polaris or spend the money to shrink Bristol Ridge. They would probably use a cut down Tonga.
I still think ARM and Polaris makes the most sense for Nintendo if they are going AMD, but that's just me assuming that Nintendo isn't going x86 and they won't use Zen.

It's possible. Most of the speculation around ARM comes from that quote from Iwata where he talked about unifying portable/console development environment and architecture. There's also Nintendo's experience with ARM from numerous previous portables, and the fact they've been using exclusively RISC processors since the N64.

Unless they heavily customized Puma to be on the 14nm node which would cost more money opposed to simply going with an already 14nm node, I'd say Puma is out of the question especially if NX is using Polaris. If it's not ARM, then if they go with X86 it could be nothing else but Zen or some highly customized version of Zen like Zen Lite.
Their handheld could go good with Zen with the power efficiency so maybe that's why Nintendo ain't launching in 2016 after all. It's not just software issue well mostly but it's also hardware issue and waiting for the right chips before going into mass production later on this year.

Nintendo was going to use Bristol Ridge from the start for the NX but caught wind of Polaris which used to be called Arctic Islands and they wanted in on its features and power efficiency but Polaris ran on 14nm while Bristol Ridge Nintendo was using was seen as old and well pretty dead aka outdated and would cost them more money to try and customize it into a 14nm APU themselves or getting AMD to do it so they decided to can the Bristol Ridge APU so they can get something newer and would work with Polaris.

If they go with X86 then for CPU it has to be some custom Zen or Puma+ at 14nm. The latter is much more expense to get from 28nm to 14nm so they're better off going with the smaller node from the getco which is Zen but highly customized and whittled down to a "lite version"
If they go with ARM then it's A53 or A72. A72 is on the 16nm so customizing it a bit to get to the 14nm would take a bit of money but it's not as bad as being all the way back a 28nm. K12 doesn't come out until 2017 so I doubt they're on the table here.

Personally I just hope it has a strong launch line up more than anything. I don't care if its only slightly stronger than the Wii U, I've already got a decent PC with a 970 for multiplats.
What Nintendo needs to do to stand out is have games. Good games. Games you can only get on Nintendo.
Both Xbox and Playstation essentially have the same library aside from like 2-4 games each, the other 99% of the games available are also on PC. If Nintendo simply launched the NX with a decent handful of cool new games that can only be played on NX, people will notice.
