Depends what timeline she's from. One of Toriyama's earlier statements about the arc says it'll involve multiple timelines and "could get confusing", implying it'll be more than just the main timeline and Trunks' timeline.
Maybe Mai is from an alternate future that follows Super so she was turned into a kid, then grew up again and shit happened and she got sent to Trunks' time.

I'm just now getting back into Dragon Ball. I used to watch it when I was like 10 or so, but never got too into it. I'm playing Xenoverse and I know a bit about it but I've never read the manga. I just downloaded 42 issues of it I believe, is that everything? I know there's Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Should I watch the anime too? Heard there's lots of filler so is there an episode guide? Watching Kai is probably the way to go. You don't have nostalgia for it, so the changed music won't matter, and it's a fairly accurate adaptation of the manga, with the filler from Z removed. Plus, if you watch the dub, it's way better, now that the actors are more experienced, and certain roles have a much needed recasting.

Trunks' timeline is different from the main timeline we follow.
It's like GT and Super; their timelines are both the same up to a point (the defeat of Buu), but events unfold differently at one part causing them to split into seperate timelines.
In Trunks' case, the timelines first split when Cell arrives in the past.

I don't hate it, and I don't love it. I can't tell whether my lukewarm reaction is due to the show itself not being that great, or if I've just grown out of the DB formula at this point. I think a part of my problem is that they're playing it way too safe. The first two arcs were elongated retellings of the movies, and the most recent arc was just a tournament that really didn't have any stakes involved. I'm still waiting for that moment where it starts getting really good, and we're almost 50 episodes in.

The anime is disappointing. The movie rehash arcs are outright worse than the movies, and the fight choreography in the U6 tournament is pretty bland.

There was that What-If in Budokai Tenkaichi 2 where Raditz got blown the fuck up during his first fight with Piccolo and lost his memories. He made his way to Kame House, paled around with Goku for months while slowly regaining his memories, and Piccolo was still villainous since he never spent quality time with Gohan.

In the end, Piccolo became a mere acquaintance with no real attachment to Gohan.
Goku never died so he never got King Kai's training and was much weaker.
