Back in the day when I played MW2 (yeah, yeah, I was a cod kid on xbox), my original copy got really fucked up. I went to Wal-mart, bought a new copy, switched it out with the copy that was scratched to all hell, and took it back to Wal-mart. I was nice to them and said I'd come back later when they didn't have a copy so they just gave me a refund. I proceeded to buy a copy of Bad Company 2 right then and there.

My brother used to take my games and pawn them. Grew up poor, so only got a game on Christmas and my birthday, so it felt really bad. One day, he just pawned the console, too. He did this twice, and my parents stopped buying me any games. I had to buy them myself. I've had games stolen when letting friends borrow them. Their friends or their friend's friend would just take it.

I had a copy of GTA San Andreas, it got strached and became unplayable. This was back when I was in 10th grade.
So my friends distracted him and I switched the copies of the game. Stupid fucker never really played the game either. He said he beat it in one night but, I saw on his memory card that he hasn't played it in three weeks and all he had was a taxi cab. Barely beat the second mission. I don't feel bad at all.

Either way, stealing isn't defined by the market, like you described, it's defined by property. If you steal a loaf of bread from a baker, he no longer has that loaf of bread. If you "steal" through a piracy, you have taken nothing from that company. Digital piracy, legally, is basically copyright infringement, not stealing, since you're publicly reproducing intellectual property (actually I'm just talking out my ass here, I know nothing about laws, but you get what I'm saying). It's one thing to say you want to support a company by paying money towards their game, but it's not stealing to not pay. That's like saying you're stealing from a movie theater if you sneak in without paying.
