It's not as ideal as keyboard and mouse but the controls are pretty interesting, you have the stick for longer turns (on max sensitivity) and the gyro for smaller nudges.
I genuinely believe Splatoon will make gyro controls for console shooters the standard.

I hope so too, admittedly its not as precise as a mouse an keyboard but it works as its own thing; it gives you a much more "in the game" experience. Gyro controls for shooters were long overdue since nobody wanted to try anything new.

Splatoon's controls are interesting, as the gyro is pretty much mouse aiming in cone. Usually controllers are auto-aim assisted slugs and MKB an 360 spinning eye of sauron. With Splatoon, you get controller's movement with restricted mouse aim in about 180 cone infront of you.

Nintendo needs to unleash their younger talent if this is the kind of stuff they're capable of. I like some of miyamoto's older games just as much as anybody else but but nowadays he seems to shit up anything he touches. Splatoon's a fantastic use of the Gamepad. It's a good example of a game being well designed for the controller. How would you slow swim with WASD? Conversely, what point would a typically WASD game have using an analog stick? Kinda explains some of those crossplats being superior on PC when they have to design the controls for use with KBM and console, comparing the two usually puts KBM on top.
Splatoon's gyro controls I'd say are clearly superior to regular "console" shooters, though I'd say it's barely inferior to KBM due to lack of familiarity with the control style. Clutching it like a controller, yet being able to do those swift aim movements akin to using a mouse, yet having the ability to control your speed with an analog stick. It's wacky, but it works for the game. Best shooter of this gen though? Maybe, Japan certainly would think soeven if they're mostly autistic casuals.

Which you also use to aim, so you can not CAN NOT do a 30 or 60 degree movement. What you're talking about with mouse is turning. You can do the same shit with two analog sticks. WASD is still only 8 directions. Strictly speaking of movement, analog is better as it offers full control of direction and the speed which you travel. Mouse greatly compensates for where WASD is lacking, but it is still worse for movement.
But what mouse does do with it's fast precious turning is to give great awareness of your surroundings, which helps with moving in general.

I believe it used the IR sensor. The Wiimote without motion plus was not accurate enough to do controls similar to Splatoon. Even with motion plus, it feels laggy compared to the WiiU pad. IR is certainly better that an analog stick, but I would consider gyro a significant step up from it.
