There isn't a debate, TTYD takes literally everything and improves on it several times over. Anyone who says PM is better is literally just saying it to be a contrarian.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Paper Mario has a safe main story but each chapter is pretty much consistently great & the gameplay was still fairly new, even if SMRPG did a lot of similar things.

TTYD expanded upon everything it could, super guarding, interaction crowd, stylish commands, bingo, grander main story & more unique areas. The backtracking & chapters though are a hit or miss, like look at Chapter 4, great atmosphere, interesting characters and plot, but suffers from the whole chapter being backtracking.

Basically it's up to you to determine if expanded gameplay & story is better than not as consistently good chapters & also backtracking. Personally I prefer N64 one but I still adore TTYD, it's very close to being better than 64 to me.

It's 20 rounds. Also a balance of both gameplay & story is best for a game, at least an RPG. I gotta ask though, if you don't care for plot & don't seem to like the gameplay for the series why are you in here or playing the games at all?
>>
>>339823596

64 didn't have a massive obsession with backtracking aside from FF.

TYD had better battles and better overall moments in the game but I feel 64 was the most consistent in terms of quality.

>if you don't care for plot

I did not say that.

You're 0/2 on the reading score there, buddy. I love Paper Mario -- but the combat against regular enemies is terrible. I liked the plot of Chapter 3 -- but the gameplay portion is a slog.

Only people who have actually played the game are allowed to talk. Go play a pacifist run of Glitz Pit if you really believe this -- and don't tell me that scaring all the enemies away isn't fighting them; that would be an even more tedious way of avoiding a tedious battle.

To everyone ITT who wants more Paper Mario, I suggest Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. In addition to being funny as fuck the gameplay has QTEs much like the Mario RPGs.

Then why mention "read a story" then? It heavily implies you could not give a rats ass about plot & feel it's pointless.

>Gameplay
You said "Paper Mario's barely acceptable combat (outside of bosses)". While I did read over the boss part, a lot of the game is focused on normal enemies which includes the same gameplay/combat you have when you're fighting bosses.

Just word things a bit better or you're gonna give people like me the wrong idea. It sounded like you're just simply shitting on both the gameplay & plot.

And you're heavily implying that you're an ass. Don't put words in my mouth. The read a book comment was to preemptively shut up anyone saying I should enjoy the slog because of the plot.

>a lot of the game is focused on normal enemies

No, a lot of the game is focused on exploring areas, interacting with NPCs, solving puzzles, and so on. This is all fun, this is all great.

And then the game sticks me in a small area and tells me to do the worst part of the gameplay 20 times but with an additional, annoying restriction. Note the last bit, another part of my initial post you conveniently forgot to read.

Actually it balances it out since they're all a big focus of the game.
>>
>>339824949
The battle system is one of the best parts of the series, you fucknut.
>>
>>339819080
64 is better because it has less filler content and just higher quality content throughout the whole game. TTYD has several shitty chapters, in fact, the only chapter that really stands out as something special is the train.

64's combat system is just right, where TTYD tries to expand on it but ends up making it unnecessarily convoluted and annoying. I don't want to have to press buttons 3 different times per turn, and keep an eye on the audience and the background. I prefer 64's combat as it is based more on making the right choices, and only slightly based on action.
>>
>>339825167

Can you go one post without correcting me on things I never said? If you're going to lecture me on on wording things better, don't say something stupid like
>a lot of the game is focused on normal enemies
When you agree that focus is split between many things.

Of course combat is once of the focuses in the game; I'd be stupid to deny that.

Just let me have my opinion on the Glitz Pit without acting like a pedant.
>>
>>339825156
The train is pretty comfy too, anon.

>>339825335

Maybe compared to other JRPGs, but that's not exactly a high bar.

>>
>>339825483
Then don't straight up say no to what I said. If anything you should say "Yes, it does, but it also does X thing". Chill out, my initial reasoning was just to word things better so you don't give the idea, you're taking this way too close to heart.
>>

Do you guys think they intended to phase out RPG elements from the beginning? Look at the way the combat system transitioned from Super Mario RPG on the SNES, to Paper Mario, to TTYD. It gradually became more and more action oriented, eventually abandoning RPG elements altogether. It's almost as if they think action based gameplay is inherently better than turn based combat, and clearly a logical evolution.
>>
>>339825813

Don't act smug like you made some kind of point -- you act like difficulty has nothing to do with a combat system. If I never have to make any decisions and the simplest method is always the most effective, then the deepest combat mechanics in the world won't save it.
>>
>>339826110
You can say this about every nintendo game. A lot of elements are being cut, to make them simplier and "easy to new players".
>>
>>339826321
No, the creators intentionally put in easy options and difficult options for winning. One is for the little kiddies who play with their parents to use. Guess which category you just admitted to fall into?

I read elsewhere that in a 2007 interview in Nintendo Power the Director for the first 3 games was contemplating on whether to go back to the first 2 games traditional RPG gameplay or Super's. I've been looking for scans of this issue but I can't find jack for downloads/torrents on Nintendo Power for issues in the mid-2000s. If it's true that then just shows Sticker Star wasn't originally gonna happen. Also the back of the box for Paper Mario 64 straight up says the game is a Action-Adventure game.
>>
>>339826873
>Also the back of the box for Paper Mario 64 straight up says the game is a Action-Adventure game

I don't think Nintendo would put the words "RPG" or "role-playing game" when neither children nor parents have any idea what that is.

Heck, I can't think of any JRPG that actually calls itself that, but I'm not thinking very hard.
