15 years ago we had amazing Mech Warrior and Commander games. Nowadays the former is F2P shit and the latter is a fucking kickstarter. They are a perfect representation of most current PC exclusives.
It's funny to me how popular genres like survival games pretend like it's hard to develop and how this is the only way to make games nowadays, and yet more niche genres like RTS and grand strategy like DoW3, Gothic Armada or TW Warhammer still get made the normal way.

That's because the developers/publishers of those games have fuckloads more money to play with, Kickstarter and Early Access enable devs to operate outside the traditional box, which sometimes doesn't work out well (Wreckfest, Spacebase DF9) but I think it has more successes than failures, assuming you only pay attention to things that actually looked promising to begin with.

Plenty of console games like pic related are made by very small AA studios, or indie studios, with little budget and quite a lot of the have absolutely no mainstream appeal, they are weird, quirky, deviate from the norm and aim for a 10k-30k niche. If there were no indies or AA's on consoles then you'd have a point. But there are a shit ton, and the % of KS/EA console games is much MUCH lower than the % of KS/EA PC games.
Most of the time KS games promise the world and deliver on nothing (HyperLight for example) or ask for millions and then STILL get a publisher, making KS completely redundant and simply robbing people out of their money.
Same with EA, only the minority, the absolute exception, makes them right. The vast majority puts their game on EA, do their best to fix crashes, sometimes add a cash-shop (lol) and leave it at that, never truly finishing the game, they just pretend like the current state of the game is their "final vision" and leave it there because the cash is already in their pockets.
Those two platforms are used and abused way too regularly. Most devs are shit at management too, so they burn money quick, like StarCitizen and many others.
There is simply no excuse to support those platforms. It just spawns more KS/EA/F2P shit, that's why literally half of all PC exclusives are like that nowadays. You help devs being lazy greedy fucks and guess what happens? They get lazy and greedy.

That shit is Japanese though, development works differently over there (I'm sure funding options are much different)
Crowdfunding is actually a completely new paradigm of game development, some games simply could not exist if it weren't for it. You can't argue against this. Sometimes publishers end up funding the games still because they see that people were willing to donate to an idea for a game, which obviously means there's a market for said game.
EA though, yeah that is abused fairly commonly but it's a good idea and works well when used how it's meant to be used -- to allow buyers to test games as they're developed and suggest changes. Still a good thing on the whole. It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money, after all.

They are both wonderful services, the problem is that only 1 out of 20 games has developers with genuine intentions, good enough management skills and realistic expectations.
The other 19 have huge egos, spend resources (both money and time) unwisely, and inflate their goals to unrealistic standards (5 more characters xDD Boss rush mode xDD 20400 person online co-op xDD, etc)
And it's always a coin flip. Even if you 100% trust a programer or a lead designer on the team a lot of thing can still go wrong, mostly to do with bad management/expectations/ego. And KS games with stupid bloated extra goals are also usually the ones that get the most attention, the platform encourages that flashy behavior.
Even if you only support the good projects (which only happens if you are a time-traveler and know in advance which ones are ShovelKnight or FTL god-tier, and which ones are MN9 or HLD scams to avoid) you still call attention to the platform those games spawned from. It gets the eyes of every eveloper out there, they stop trying the harder and better "normal" get-a-publisher path and do the lazy greedy thing instead.

Even in stagnated form, Japan is doing better games than west in its peak form. It's tragic and it goes to show just how hard Japan used to steamroll everything in the 90's and early 00's. Big budget productions and heavy marketing wasn't their thing though and they fell behind as western industry basically became Hollywood in mass productions and massive advertising campaigns that drove AA devs into bankruptcy.

50k € in financial support, they also take care of marketing and give you facilities for a year. It was aimed at uni students or small studios with no publisher.
I also contacted the local MS and they don't have any program whatsoever, nor are they interested. Sony, even outside that contest, kept my contact and gave the time of their day for an interview.
