I don't get why everyone hates this gun. I found it fun to shoot metro cops with, and by the time stronger enemies came you had other weapons anyway. It served its purpose for the levels it was designed for. If anything, the Glock in the first game was worse. No semi-auto pistol deserves such a garbage fire rate (and the alt-fire was just useless).

I found that pistol more useful than the HL2 version. It was fine for killing smaller enemies like hound eyes and headcrabs, using it to save ammo over the spammy MP5 was pretty standard. Once you get the better guns in HL2 there's 0 reason to use that starting pistol. It's just so ass.

I was so amped to try out the shotty for such a badass game, but no, it's so unbelievably bad that I had to turn the game off for a bit and just do something else.

Shockingly terrible shotgun. Up until I played Shadow Warrior last year, the worst shotgun I had ever used in a game was HL2's shotgun, because it has THE worst sounding, most unsatisfying shotgun sound effects I've ever heard in a video game but at least it didn't suck total ass damage wise.

But the one is Shadow Warrior is just the worst thing, seriously.

If you don't mind the hunt, there's a few mods out there that address some common complaints. I don't mean the flashlight/darkness stuff, shit like removing monster "waking" animations and upping their aggression. Had one that increased monster counts in levels, both spawning and preplaced.

But Doom 3 mods not on Filefront are hard to track down anymore.

In CE I usually did carry it on the Flood levels because it's probably the best gun for popping spores and it even can deal with combat forms relatively well.

I can think of a more unsatisfying shotgun in recent gaming. It's real annoying to land on it when cycling trough weapons during a frantic fight, especially on the higher difficulties since enemies sponge that much more, and bullet sponge ruins the feeling you're after in a satisfying shotgun in video games.

Yeah, it genuinely had nothing to do with Quake and was supposed to a separate IP. However, they called it Quake II for brand recognition purposes. John Romero also left over the sci-fi direction they were taking with it. The reason why Quake I is so cosy and atmospheric is because of Romero's art direction.

It's probably Unreal weapons. That game was really good, and designers created awesome guns, like Flak Cannon or ASMD (which have become staple of Unreal Tournament), there are other weapons. Crystal Stinger has annoying sound and low damage on both firing modes. Dispersion Pistol (even upgraded) was really shit, no wonder it doesn't appear in UT and subsequent games.

I tried playing some FEAR 2 a few days ago. The thing made me quit early was when I used the grenades.

They barely fucking explode, the sound and size they had in 1 is completely gone and they dont affect the enviroment nearly as much as they used to.

Pic related is 00 buck at 40 yards. It fucking sucks. You can expect almost all loads of 00 buck to have a sub 100 yard effective range. You have to remember that each individual pellet, which there is about 8-10 in a load, dumps less energy than 9mm, and is about as powerful as a .380. Comparatively a rifle can effectively engage someone at hundreds if not more than a thousand yards

The pistol feels unsatisfying because it's supposed to in order to emphasize other weapons.

The shotgun and assault rifle are decently sharp, then the chaingun, plasma gun, etc. are the most punchy and material firing and reloading sound effects in games, pretty much without question.

There are tiers and the game gets and stays satisfying as it progresses. I will never understand the "lmao doom 3 was so shit" meme, it's actually a wonderful and thoughtful game, I'm sorry it's not "your SO AWESOME LOL GORE" doom

I really enjoy them. Playing blindly, it goes from a very effective atmosphere and slower pace, to a fast paced action game over time once the atmosphere wears off. Doom 3 becomes very intense and the buildup is intentional, it starts as something like a more overtly scary system shock 2, then builds up to hardcore action Doom.

I think a lot of people play Doom 3 expecting "awesome action" right off the bat, and ultimately don't pay attention to what the game actually is

Except Doom 3 levels are colorful and have different cool pesudo-sciency thingies inside of them, like collapsing bridges, huge energy beams, Alpha reactor, monorail, toxic waste levels. I played some CE online recently and the first thing EVERYONE does when spawning is switch to the pistol, the AR is just completely impotent. Most people don't even bother with the power weapons because they just get one shot by the pistol anyway.

Quake 4 has great weapons all around IMO.

Q4 was a great game, and the multiplayer was actually faster and more complex than the QuakeLive we have now - it had crouch sliding, ramp jumping, and projectile accurate teleporters all out of the box, all with the same basic damage and weapon formulas from the previous game. The only big problem is that it was pretty much shit on first release, and it took a few patches to become great.

The Quake fanbase is honestly one of the worst. They spend so much time whining about the death of the series, when they have been so openly hostile to any positive changes, and openly hostile to new players. I just shake my head now when I see people asking for a Quake5, since none of those fucks will actually play it even if it comes out - it will be different from the Q3A/CPMA/QL that they are used to in some insignificant way and they will whine.

Probably because they are indirect fire weapon that you pretty much always have access to after you get them. I use them in most games, good for checking corners for hostiles, throwing one down before reloading etc.

It had some real good weapons imo, because you have the assault rifle and the chain gun, it seemed very appealing, and the fact it had 2 shotguns as well (both which were very interesting, but I liked the normal shotty design more).
