It was used to shittalk the genre at first (because blob combat with no importance with party positioning even though that's not necessarily true) but it lost its negative connotation over time.

Looks like Undertale.

I haven't actually played Undertale so don't sperg me if I said something stupid.

That being said, if a game as simple as Undertale can make you rich, why don't more amateur programmers make games like it?
>>
>>339796946
Have you ever been in combat? You lose the fight the moment you sway and fall over.
>>
>>339796946
Because stagger, recoil, flinching, and basic combat mechanics don't exist in TES. The closest we ever got was morrowind. But even that didn't have the complete basics.
>>
>>339797181
Have you ever played a video game? You lose when you allow yourself to be hit more than you are hitting the enemy.
>>
>>339797145
Wizardry isn't that simple. Look up the SA LP of wizardry 4 if you want to feel casual. It's one of those games I've always wanted to play but don't want to put in the effort to beat it.

>>339797213
I don't understand what any of that has to do with what I asked. I asked why do the players stand still. As in, why don't they move out of range of enemy attacks and only return into range when they are ready to execute a powerful attack.

A good chunk of western game devs throughout the 80s/early 90s were tabletop gamers who wanted to recreate their campaigns on the computer screen.

If you don't then you're kinda retarded. There's no point unless you're a range fighter. But when you're mellee it's different. Since there's no basic combat mechanics to force the player to take advantage of trading, blocking, and dodging attacks, all you do is simply attack and heal until you win.

In a game with basic combat mechanics you would just bait out an attack, then respond with your own since the enemy would be open to attack on whiff. In Shitrim there's no concept of whiffing at all. You could simply keep swinging without worrying about getting staggered and being put at a disadvantage on the next swing, leading to another stagger.

>>
>>339798887
6 pack is the right one, it worked flawlessly for me (w7). Just make sure you install the fanpatch on top, it adds nice utility.
>>
I with RPGs were more like older ones in that you can directly ask about things they mentioned in their talks and learn more about the quest and world that way. Make it feel like you are actually talking to them.

Instead of just chosing a predetermined response.
>>
>>339798887
GOG has a pack for the first 6 games for 10 bucks. Just grab that. 3-6 are all worth playing. Get the grayface patch for 6 and make a music folder and copy the files in your sound folder to your music folder. I would also recommend getting the resolution mod that lets you play in a window at a resolution larger than the default one. For the DOSbox games you can get an MT-32 emulator for better sounding music.
>>
>>339799086
Voice acting ruined it.
>>
>>339798201
>all you do is simply attack and heal until you win.
Or you could attack and avoid getting hit in the first place. Lack of complex mechanics have nothing to do with my observation that these suckers just let themselves be hit! You CAN dodge attacks by just not being there when the attack animation completes!
>>
>>339798953
which was retarded. rather than trying to copy cheap indie stuff, they should have made a proper open world game. The noobs would call it skyrim with a party and more loot, but i would swallow my rage for getting another game like mm6

That shit's expensive and by proving nobody cares about Might and Magic you'll never get a new one

Or maybe we do, by another studio, but people will just nitpick it and it will another thousand copies
>>
>>339798953
Pre-6 would've been fine if they had a decent budget.
>>
>>339799168
Because staggers almost never happen, you can keep on swinging even after whiffing. NPCs do this, so there's absolutely no advantage in baiting attacks since you'll just get hit in the next swing anyways. Baiting in skyrim and oblivion is a worthless waste of time when you're simply reducing your damage output while taking the same amount of damage. The only time you should be kiting an enemy is when you have a superior ranged mellee weapon, or a bow.

The thing is, other studios have already released games in that genre fairly recently, and they were pretty good.

No one has made a game that's played like M&M6 since the trilogy.
>>
>>339799606
That's true. At least the new Bard's Tale seems to be trying some new stuff.
>>
>>339799168
>>339799529
But in the case of Oblivion you can bait out attacks if you have way more movement speed than the enemy. You can do hit and run tacktics only because of speed and athletics. But Shitrim is completely fucked in that department.

I really hate the 90's era PC game aesthetic. It's like western devs have no idea how to make appealing art direction. It's a shame too, since there are tons of great games from that time period, but they all look like shit.

It's not the lack of polygons or special effects, but they just have no fucking art direction. Even in fantasy and sci-fi games, where they could do anything they want, it's always "let's make everyone look as realistic as we can make them and then fill everything else with uncanny spritework and poorly textured 3D models."

Japan was the only country that gave a shit at the time. Go and look at something like Panzer Dragoon Saga. Released in 1998 on a system that could hardly handle 3D models, yet I still think that game looks great because of how wonderful the world design and art direction were.
>>
>>339803949
I don't like the aesthetic. Maybe if it was a game full of girls drawn in 80's anime style I could accept it as not being an obvious downside, visually, but then there'd still be the daft stories, and fuck lazy visual novel style storytelling.

>Ultima changed and evolved with each and every game, both its main games and spinoffs setting a standard time and again, ending with Ultima Online
>Last few games of the main series were deliberately shitting on the series because of Electronic Arts's stranglehold on Origin Games

>Might&Magic evolved over the course of its series from simple turn based to semi-active on field combat then to full real time and free movement, effectively becoming a goofy but great first person shooter
>Hit its high point with 6 and the later games hardly changed, games seen as dated on release, an attempted revival was just a mediocre M&M4-like

>Wizardry slowly grew at first and stuck to its turn based guns, but leaped ahead with a kick ass final game that dramatically improved upon itself and adapted to modern conventions and a full 3D world without becoming schlock
>Japan took the series and made a bunch of budget, "hard" generic fantasy early Wizardry wannabes before the series actually became bizarrely awesome science fantasy setting-wise.

Good times.

it's hard to pin down why. I'm not sure. Maybe I'm a pleb and Darksun and Ravenloft games were a bit easier? BG was super fucking hardcore. Then again, when I played Xcom I played on impossible where it was like a good ol' D&D, one wrong move and your whole party dies.

I don't even remember, in BG do you even make a party? I don't think so. Darksun was just so much easier to get into right at the get-go. You made a party, customizing each character, and then fought in an arena at the beginning. The story was more engaging, imo.

>>
>>339821604
You don't make a party in BG but you get a few good party members almost right after start. It's not a very hard game imo but you need to quicksave a lot to avoid getting frustrated. If someone dies in combat you might as well load your last save instead of carrying all their shit and paying out the ass to revive them at a shrine.

Also you should give everyone a ranged weapon at the start to weaken enemies before they get to melee range. It's a pretty op strategy.

You aren't even trying.

This was actually from 1997 too, although clearly, not the height of graphics. A lot of the prepackaged scenarios are still better than many modern RPG's though, and have more actual play time and content.

The main series games that preceded it, the Exile Series, have far, far more content than many modern RPGS and shit loads of dialogue.

because combat is so floaty, dodging hits rarely works. You can't even parry incoming blows, because block isn't responsive enough, you can only turtle behind block.
In Skyrim's combat, winner is who can out-DPS the enemy. And if NPC can deal more DPS than you, you still win, since you have instant-healing potions avaliable via active pause menu

Could someone answer me two quick questions about Gothic? Playing it for the first time but I don't want to look up a walkthrough.

First, how do I into magic? I wanted to play as a mage but so far I haven't figured this out. Nigga at New Camp can give me more mana, and he apparently sells some magic books, but I have no idea how to use that shit. It's kind of annoying because no one in this fucking shithole pays you in cash, so I need to fight to make some money. But right now my only option is to pump points in sword and strength. Not that I'm completely against going spellsword, but I don't know if this game has enough skill points for hybrid builds. And while I don't hate sword combat, the way blocking works is the most infuriating shit ever.

Second, is killing certain types of enemies level-locked? Because right now I can't damage shit like crocodiles and crawlers. I can hit them, all right, but I do zero damage.

Point is - which chapter. Later in game you get choice to be fire mage in Old Camp, Water - new and get psionic shit from Weed Camp. Just play, you will eventually get toward it.

Many enemies have shitload of HP and on lower levels damaging them is fucking hard. They work as stop element to don't get into some areas too soon. But you can outsmart system in a few points and get sweet items for future.

This made programming very confusing compared to the ps2 wich everyone knew what was going to be there, its because of this difference that consolefags keep deluding himselfs about graphics on consoles.

>>339845105
Yeah, I only just started, still in Chapter 1. Got lost like a bitch while trying to find that guy who teaches hunting skills and ended up in New Camp. The main quest right now feels very loose, so I'm mostly just dicking around. My options for movement and exploration are somewhat restricted, to say the least. At level 3 I can kill birds, pigs, and wasps reasonably well, and managed to off the occasional lizard that blocked my way as I was running away from black goblins and wolves. I don't even know the way back to Old Camp.

Weed Camp sounds fun, though. And psionic magic sounds great.

I might take this advice. Really, my biggest problem with melee is that once you resort to blocking you are at the mercy of the AI. If it moves away for a second, you can turn. If it keeps breathing in your face, you have to stand still without the ability to even change direction, until it eventually gets through your block and you are ded. Being rooted like that feels weird as fuck.

variety western lacks.
Can you name some suit/armor designs from western franchises aside of Ironman, Chief, SpaceMarine? Also notice the thing which unites those designs? That they are pretty damn old and changed a little aka being rehashed same way.
recall last sci-fi game you played, can you recall instantly interesting designs? Or they all blended together?
Main problem is overuse of desalination - best example is bayformers - how to lose all identity as characters by adding way too many details to "wow" general public which will forget about everything aside of small moving details after the movie
