Not retarded as far as I know, I was just misinformed from repeating what someone else stated. If it really is as strong as a 1070 for half the price, AMD's going to make an absolutely massive comeback while Nvidia desperately slashes prices to compete. This might be the best generation for PC gaming yet. If Nvidia doesn't provide a better value I'll be gladly switching to Team Red, not only for ethics but for that tessellation control which will be incredibly useful on newer games.
Honestly, I've been wanting to defect to Team Red for a while now. I can't support any company that blatantly false advertises their video cards, the 3.5gb debacle really cemented by distaste of Nvidia. All AMD has to do is provide a better value and I'll be ditching green for good.

I've got a 1500 dollar PC that I built myself after spending my entire life playing consoles. From the age of 6, all the way until I was 17, I only played consoles.
You know why playing on PC is objectively better than any console? Objectively and vastly superior graphics, unlimited frame rate (on a PC like mine I can run any game at 80 fps, and some games run at hundreds of frames per second), full control over the game files that I payed for, the ability to modify the game files that I payed for, and in a lot of cases, more content, along with a plethora of genres of games that never get made for consoles, and when are made for consoles, suck shit like RTS's and strategy games in general.
The ONLY reason to not play primarily on a PC is because you don't have enough money, the ONLY reason. If you can't afford a nice PC, that's fine, but don't lie to yourself and others that it wouldn't be a better playing experience. I spent 11 years of my life lying to myself. I actually convinced myself that console graphics looked good enough and that I couldn't tell the difference between 30 and 60 frames per second. I was lying to myself because I couldn't afford a PC, and couldn't accept that I was having an objectively shitty playing experience compared to PC's.

No, I see a good game and potential fun playing it. It just so happens that PC's are objectively better at running them in every case ever, games always look better and run better on PC's, and so I obviously choose to play stuff on the PC. I don't play the games on PC because the graphics look good, I play games I think will be fun, and I've realized that the PC is the best gaming platform because it provides the most beautiful and immersive experience you can have.

I'm not rabid, I'm just breaking down the facts. The PC beats consoles in every single department of hardware and software, along with immense customizability, so it logically follows that if you can afford it, it makes no sense to not choose that as your primary platform. Not to mention that you don't have to spend 500 dollars every few years to get a new platform, you can just upgrade your hardware over time as you need to. I won't have to upgrade any of my hardware for many many years, and when I will have to, I won't have to spend that much money compared to buying a new console.
You people are being scammed out of your money and defending it, it's really sad.

Digital Foundry said that the specs for the 480 is the same as the PS4 Neo and the Xbox Scorpio so it's very likely the low price for the 480 is because they had console money to R&D that shit and already have millions produced for console manufacturing. They simply don't need to charge so much when it's already been subsidised by Sony and MS which gives them a huge price advantage.
In other words if Consoles keep upping in power every few years, AMD is going to be able to release $200 cards that are powerful and yet cheap in the future.

Did they give a release date on the 480X? They didn't talk about it at all at the conference or it's performance. Everything was on the 480. Also, wasn't the $200 MSRP for the 4GB variant and not the 8GB?
1070 still seems like the better deal. You're paying more, but your getting more long-term performance out of your GPU at 1080p gaming and demanding games in the future. If you want a good budget, compact build build it's great. For more deeper gaming hobby time, 1070 seems to be it.

8gb 480 is $230
I think the 480 is a better deal, almost half the price, only 15-20% slower and probably faster in dx12 games
AMD cards also seem to have much more longevity than nvidia cards
