I'd a like a game with a decent story/characters and one where I'm not constantly grinding.
You're always going to be grinding. Now go play Tactics Ogre and contemplate the nature of men.
Does Parasite Eve really count as an RPG? Either way, play it.

Skip the last 5 on that list. They're not good.
Start with wild arms 2. It's got great characters, it's not very grindy, and the music is top tier.
Unfortunately the translation is not the best. But it's still a wonderful game.
Rogue Galaxy and then replay it 5 times.
