It's always been readily apparent that Kojima really cares about the series and put a lot of effort into the littlest details. He basically was forced to make the last 2 major installments under less than ideal circumstances. MGS4 was by no means great and 5 is painfully unfinished but at least they had that touch of raw passion that he puts into everything. All that work and autism put into this world and series only to be kicked out. This pachinko machine is not only an insult to MGS and everything and everyone it stands for, but is the antithesis of artistic creativity as a whole. Fuck Konami.

The series went downhill due to extreme levels of fan pandering and sequelitis induced by Konami commissioning a stream of sequels, past the original intended ending.
In order to prevent the "monster of the week" effect multiple time periods were used, and to keep each installment relevant to the overall narrative, retcons were necessary to firmly anchor the new additions to the old canon.
It would have been fine once, but with the stream of sequels that poured out since MGS2, with each one developing as the final one ever - it became a retconned retcon retconning a retcon.
