You can't brick your Wii U with the current hacks since you aren't actually modifying the Wii U in any way. You're just straight up loading the exploits through your SD card and a website. Once you turn your Wii U off everything goes back to normal.

Are you on version 2.2.6? Earlier versions of FBI had problems with certain games and DLC because it needed to import the seeds from the eshop, so you would have to enter the game's eshop page to get that after installing the cia. Later versions fix that.
Otherwise you might be installing DLC from the wrong region, which would also cause it to not show up.

It breaks compatibility for certain CFWs and Gateway, although I believe Luma should be fine. It's more that his code isn't done properly (it interferes with the region-free coding of some CFW's/Gateway), and he refuses to make it open source so people can fix it.
I can personally confirm it fucks up Gateway, rxTools, and Reinand. It seems to be due to the old format they use, versus the newer formats that Luma uses.
