Honestly, I think it's the opposite. I think they know they absolutely can top Shovel Knight but they want to focus on it and get everything they promised done first.
I'm really impressed by how much effort they put into each new character. They can't be making money doing this, but SK made a lot of money beforehand anyhow. This feels like nigh-pure passion. They could fulfill the stretch goals with far less effort.

They promised campaigns of Plague Knight, Specter Knight, and King Knight as well as a multiplayer battle mode.
They'll work on new stuff after they finish everything the promised for Shovel Knight.
I can't believe they're still working on this game. This is why KS stretch goals are retarded. I lost all interest in Shovel Knight a long, long time ago. While I would have loved additional content when I first beat the game, at this moment? I couldn't care less.

It's actually great for them because it's allowed them to keep the game's price fairly high because of the new content that's really just 2 new characters and 2 new bosses.

I wasn't aware of the code but that still doesn't change my interest levels from a game I've long since lost interest in. I'm sure I would have loved to check it out if it was available when I was playing the game 2 years ago. As it stands it just seems half-assed because it's added so late and it's so insubstantial. In this amount of time we could have an entirely new game and what do we have instead? A new character and some "changes"? Surely you can see how this looks half-assed from a potential of what could have been perspective?

Plague was very unique, and spectre knight has the possibility to have big gameplay changes as well. But how would king knight do? The story is one of the main points, of course, but the gif in the OP is not convincing me yet. It looks good, but not unique.
