From what I've heard, it made mobility a LOT easier. Scaling mountains was made no problem at all, tunnels weren't needed as much, and building needed much more strategy.

Autoclimb was mostly for accessability. It makes going up hills and jumping out of the river easier, but otherwise movement is still pretty fucked up. Descending kills any momentum you had and you can climb hills faster by approaching the blocks a certain way.
