I genuinely think it's that Gearbox got cocky, since I believe that BattleBorn was properly revealed (as in gameplay stuff) earlier than Overwatch. But yeah, GB definitely should've delayed the game a couple of months.

Battleborn and Overwatch aren't even that similar, Gearbox just acted like the two were going head to head in an attempt to gather more attention when they realized nobody gave a shit about BB.
Didn't really work out in the end though, Blizzard humored them and slapped the free beta right on top of BB's launch date.
