Anyone have suggestions for good Lovecraft influenced games? I am currently reading through his work and am really enjoying myself.

Bloodborne and Xcom: Terror from the Deep.
Bloodborne is the best.
Call of Cthulhu
Fallout
Lovecraft is as fedoracore as it gets. Why do you think so many sonyfags praise bloodborne?
You can find minor references to him littered everyone from Alan Wake to Witcher 3 if you look hard enough.
I'd personally recommend that you download an emulator and try out Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem though, that's one of my favorites.
Quake 1.
Eternal Darkness
>>339729897
hes overrated as fuck
>>339729897
Darkest Dungeon is pretty fun in my opinion, but a lot of people blame the RNG in the game instead of just "making the best out of a bad situation" like the game says
>>339731021
because its a fun game?
Is lovecraftian the new steampunk?
legacy of kain
although I'd say LoC is better than anything every written by Lovecraft
>>339731021
Hating Lovecraft is the real fedoracore, m8
Nothing even comes close to Bloodborne
Dhadow of the Colossus, somewhat.
Darkest Dungeon is pretty Lovecraft.
Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth is literally Shadow Over Innsmouth the game.
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver has heavy Lovecraft influences as well as gothic.
For a fairly buggy but still enjoyable point and click, Sherlock Holmes the Awakened is fairly respectful to both Lovecraft and Doyle.
>>339731373
Pathologic has nothing to do with Lovecraft
Quake
Bloodborne
SOMA
Call of Cthulhu obviously
Penumbra
I think Amnesia, with the knowledge curse and shit
Legacy of Kain
and some other indie games I cant think of rn

Eternal Darkness is basically a bunch Lovecraft stories crammed into a single game

>>339731756
I'd say that one is more Poe influenced.
It doesn't really have the Lovecraftian feel to it. Although with the living halls I guess it does borrow somewhat from it.
>>339731828
I remember watching a video about it that goes pretty deep about it but is in spanish, althought I might say its because of the "humanity" feel of the game and how you are losing it a bit for bit, or something like that, sorry if im wrong senpai

>>339731338
Maybe. Though right now it's hard for trendy hipsters to like him because he was racist, so it might be able to survive the cancer that killed steampunk aesthetics.
Turns out it's hard to appropriate a style of horror that is all about cosmic indifference to fit special snowflakes.
Come to think of it, horror movies seem to hold out well against these types of people.
Silent Hill series remind me Innsmouth stuff
>>339731338
came around the same time if I'm not mistaken, lovecraftian just outlived steampunk

hey, it's not only me saying it
You can clearly make a huge difference between say Doyle and Poe and Lovecraft's quality of writing.
I put him in the same class as Tolkien on that part although in terms of writing Tolkien has the upper hand although for LotR and prequel books pacing was absolutely atrocious.
It's out of the mainstream of what's considered a generally well written book. Although I'm not a fan of King even though he practices these principles of effective writing.
I'd say a lot of scifi writers are very good at concise clear and good writing.

There's also the Dunwich Building in Fallout 3, easily the best part of the entire game

>>339732983
>doom and quake are somewhat similar
This thinking is why the remake is gonna be shit.
Doom and Quake are only similar insofar as being FPS games made by id. Quake is a much slower, meatier game, with fewer enemies who are more damage-resistant and smarter with their attacks, and level design that is usually compact with lots of overlapping and circling about over previous areas thanks to Romero and the others' fantastic mapping.
On top of that it's a very moody, dull game- there's no cheeky Metallica songs remade in MIDI format, no ripping and tearing with a chainsaw or a double-barrel shotgun that blows away everything short of a Cyberdemon. Lots of browns and greys that still look clean due to limitations of the time, unlike modern filter-obsessed browns and greys, little story beyond "go into the slipgates and shoot the things" (even less than Doom!), you don't even get a +use key to interact with things in favor of smacking it with an axe.
Quake 1 is a result of rushed development and smashed-together ideas that, in combination with Carmack's new engine wizardry, a group of excellent mappers and artists, and Reznor's fantastic sound design, turned out way better than the sum of its parts, and I can't help but feel like any attempt at recreating that by-chance mixture will end up too similar to another Doom (because who the fuck knows what a Quake is anyway, right? Give 'em some demons and a machine gun instead of a nailgun and give Ranger a closed helmet, that's what the kids like).

That's pretty much BB's theme, and what happens to everyone who tried to become a Great One, or something similar to one.
BB deviates from LC in the fact that you can actually harm Old Ones, your mind isn't always blown, or you aren't dragged into suicide, etc etc
But then again you are infused with the blood of a Great One and you are being (kind of) controlled by one too, doing him a service, unknowingly, so the protag's OP-ness is a bit justified.
There are a lot of shared themes and direct references to a plethora of his books. The last third of the DLC is pretty much shadow over innsmouth almost copy/pasta'd

Do you not understand reading comprehension?
H.P. Lovecraft came up with the idea of Chthulu a tentacle space monster coming from the moon, Therefore if game has any visuals or mention of this it IS based of off Lovecraft.
I never said anywhere that ALL of his stories include the same theme, its just his most popular and mainstream story.

So, the entire first half of the game?
I know it's not surprising now. Just like the Flood in Halo is common place today and expected. But when Bloodborne released people thought it was a victorian-era VanHelsing game through and through. Vampires, Werewolves and Clergy.
The lovecraftian cosmic/ocean themes are revealed later on, and every area is changed once you have enough insight or beat a certain boss. The way it's done is also nice.
Bloodborne is unquestionably lovecraftian. I just don't want to sperg out on details since most people won't bother reading this, but even basic gameplay mechanics and world design are neatly tied in with the lovecraft theme.
>>339735242
You never actually get to visit the real place. It's a dream (or nightmare, or realm, or dimension, however you wish to call it) created by a Great One.
But either way the place would be fucked, Old Ones or not. People migrated en masse to the city to search for the magic cure. A plague would occur, no doubt. There are pigs, dogs, ravens and horses in the city. Before modern medicine you'd be better off in the countryside.
Now that I think about it, people went there for the blood, which wouldn't be a thing if Old Ones wanting a surrogate child, and humans wanting to transcend wasn't a thing.
You're right, might've been a nice place.

The game borrows heavily from Lovecraft's aesthetic and a good number of his themes. The one part the game really fails at is allowing you to actually go toe to toe with them unlike in the majority of his stories, but even then they don't really die in game, and even in Call of Cthulhu the guy got it to back off by slamming a boat into it.

Though I really recommend shelling out the shekels for a physical copy of his works such as >>339736393 in order not to get lost in the text and to be able to get a better sense of the writer and the history behind them.
You should dig up corresponding episodes of http://hppodcraft.com/ to whatever you're reading, that is if you take to it.

Tentacles does not make lovecraftian.
How is this?
>>339736861
Well... Thanks for your advice chap ,I think I dodged a bullet thanks to you
>>339734986
Fucking pedant
>>339737176
Great. I thought it was comparable, superior even to Scratches.
Still haven't played the sequel though.
>>339737169
You do realise there's tentacle monsters in DeS and DaS and no one says theyre Lovecraftian right? Its not just the tentacles buddy. You'd know if you had actually read Lovecraft.
>>339734920
>>339734920
The first, maybe, half of the game Is just that.
It feels like some victorian werewolf hunting game with something else going on. Then it slowly leaks a bit to you. The enemies change and the bits of story you do get kind of craft that there's something bigger going on. Oh, some kind of factions? Hmm experiments? Slowly get sone questions answered but get an even wider scope of questions.
But yeah, after about 2/3rds of the way they're pretty prevalent, although not interactable.
>>339737284
...?
The game was shafted by Bethesda anyhow, making them push rooty tooty shooty into the game.
So while it's not literally dev's fault it still starts failing as a Lovecraftian game because of that.
>>339737042
I started browsing this piece of shit site like three years ago, and the last COD I've played was the fourth one, so you can fuck off with this "le you're just following hivemind mentality" bullshit, you fuckin retard.
>>339737140
Eternal Darkness was pretty original, but it's not as great as people make it out
The atmosphere you speak of, wasn't there for me
The best part was insanity and the bleeding walls and moving statues
>>339737169
yes, cosmic alien monsters horror and the unkown have absolutely nothing to do with lovecraft.
i'm sure the devs of bloodborne have never even heard of lovecraft
>>339735759
The Colour Out of Space, The Rats in the Walls, and The Hound are my favorites.
>>339737358
No tentacles in DaS my friend.
Only in Tower of Latria were there tentacles.
And a lot of people say Tower of Latria NPCs are lovecraftian.
>>339737365
I feel I might have to play this game now.
But please don't try to convince me, the thread will derail too much.
>>339737176
It's great. I mean, while you know that nothing will suddenly be behind you or some shit while exploring the music is extremely creepy. For someone who hasn't played too much horror the house creaking and shit was really spoopy for a long time.
You should use a guide to get all the clues and shit though. Some of them are really annoying to find.
>>339737042
How did I prove your point?
>might like them
But I played all those games and they're boring trash reahashes pandering to the lowest common denominator that buys that shit every year. Sorry you haven't grown out of your dudebro phase bud. Fuck off with your moronic ''''arguments'''', you're only showing how retarded you really are.

Also, considering it (+ its sequel) were mostly by some Turkish brothers is pretty insane.
You'll get them cheap on sales and it's on sales often.
They also have a new game coming up which looks pretty great so far.
>>339735759
A number of his stories fall flat, but that is simply because we are more accustomed to this shit than his audience was in the early 20th Century.

>You don't like souls games? What games do you even play?
I like BB and Souls but come the fuck on, they're literally just 3d metroidvanias.
>>339737495
DaS is much more classical horror although I couldn't pinpoint much of its themes to earlier written works.
The theme of a dying world for example.
Or the chosen being only one of many.
>>339735275
Alllllrighty then. Let us begin, I will make it simple for you since you are as dense as a block of ice;
>Setting is a place where the citizens have transformed into horrific beasts by a plague due to the corrupt religion being besties with eldtrich gods from outer space
>those gods by the way are called GREAT ONES. You know...LIKE GREAT OLD ONES.
>The other setting in the DLC is a fishing hamlet where the villagers are transformed into horrific fish monsters. Like another village that starts with "Inn" and ends in "smouth".
>There is a running theme of insanity whereas your character has a negative status, Frenzy, where he goes insane and dies and this is countered by Insight and by having more Insight you see the real Yharnahm and the Amygdalas that chill around the place, AKA not everything is as it seems a common leitmotif in Lovecraft's stories.
>The whole game is revealed to have been a cosmic horror story instead of a Gothic one.
>Eldtrich knowledge revealed to the ultimately evil and deceiving religion by the Space gods that led to the downfall of not only that religion but to its followers too as it was too much to handle.
and finally
>TENTACLES EVERYWHERE
Satisfied, faggot?
>>339736731
What do you expect? Within a niche theme in vidya the most popular and one of the best (within the few dozen or so games), which also has a large % of it based on lovecraft gets talked the most.
It's like making a thread asking for games wherin you hunt large beasts, and then getting pissed at everyone mentioning dragons dogma, monster hunter or witcher.
Or asking for military themes and getting butthurt that battlefield and CoD get mentioned more than ace of spades.
>>339732932
Anything to do with Hermaeus Mora is very lovecraftian.
>>339737536
Yeah, I'm sure you have played them. MM-hmm.
> Sorry you haven't grown out of your dudebro phase bud.
90% of my games are fucking Jap games. Including literal annual titles such as Atelier and Yakuza. Those sure have changed a lot over time, so pray tell, how has CoD or NBA (for example) not changed at all?
Not only that, you're using this stupid shit
>pandering to the lowest common denominator

Yep, sees himself in a mirror and shits it.
People always mention the cosmic horror shtick. A lot of his stories were also but the devolution of humans, blood curses and ancient linneages. People being compelled by their blood to act in certain ways.
Lovecraft was either really afraid of what he saw as a regression of man, orhe just really didn't like niggers, spics and gooks

I know last time I saw one of these threads I went down a list of every single Lovecraftian theme based upon the very article our fervent shitposter quoted and described how every single one applied to Bloodborne. He neglected to respond and continued to shitpost at other anons. Fun stuff
>>339738126

>>339738025
Yeah, evil might be an extremely farfetched termconsidering BB is really grey on those matters. As fore knowledge I'm mainly talking about the use of blood.

It was made before the DLC, which has another plethora of themes and references.

Goddamnit dude, I went down the whole fucking list last time and you continued to shitpost at other people. You know how hard it is to write that much on mobile?
But, since you're decent enough to put yourself forward, what is your deal? Why the dedication?
I love how people are so elitist about BB not being lovecraft when there isn't a single game that does it better, not one.
Not even Call of Cthulhu does it better when it devolves into a generic shooter. No game tackles the themes of cosmic horror better than BB and anyone who disagrees is wrong or a troll :^).
>>339738481
>Are you actually retarded enough to think people don't like or play certain games because they're following some kind of hivemind?
/v/ just keeps proving this right. Especially when it comes to popular videogames, especially ones that are popular with "normies".
>>339738594
>Not even Call of Cthulhu does it better when it devolves into a generic shooter.
Oh, why must you hurt me so
>>339738591
This is literally the first time I'm even responding to the comment chain about BB in this thread (and I'm pretty sure I've missed dozen threads).
BB is clearly influenced by Lovecraft (and I love BB mind you, can't really stand the Souls games) but I don't think it's a Lovecraft game in the truest sense. Lovecraft games only really work well in adventure game format since it's not about killing and slaying and shit. Being a normal human being and hopelessnes can shine in adventure game.
WHEN'S THE FUCKING FROGWARE CALL OF CTHULHU THO.
>>339737951
>true Lovecraft game
and it isn't.
it's not directly based on any of his works, it's just inspired, mostly in what you imagine lovecraftian aesthetic to be.
it's like saying something can't be tolkien inspired unless it has unbearably sluggish prose with loads of world building and characters doing nothing

>>339738025
Read somewhere how one theory for frenzy is when the player sees something new that is incomprehensible to them.
You gain insight regularly as you progress, seeing crazier and crazier things.
The more insight you have the more vulnerable you are to Frenzy. And frenzy occurs from the types of things that really fuck you up. E.g. Sonething that you thought was always good (like thedoll) and then seeing the same thing but actually dangerous to you and is completely fucked up (like theWinter Lanterns or whatever they're called; which are some weird disturbed dolls that are wrapped up in messenger body parts
Frenzy is rarely used, but with that head canon, it makes alot of sense when it does occur.
>>339737647
It's not really so much as it falls flat as it is that it's just a pretty silly sentence to be said considering his work consists of describing alien beings and such.
It definitely felt like it should have been something a bit more substantial than just essentially ending up as a glorified "boo!"
>>339738161
just read Beyond the Wall of Sleep today.
I don't mind Lovecraft's racism or his dislike of immigrants (since I share with him the latter towards mudslimes), but the lengths he went to trash and shit upon native americans felt a tad too much
There's also The Terrible Old Man where the robbers are obviously shitty immigrants with their foreign names and how they were going to rob an old man
>Angelo Ricci
Italian
>Joe Czanek

>>339738463
Hasn't been announced yet, but my guess is late 2016 (doubtful) or in the first half of 2017.
People saying that BB isn't Lovecraftian need to understand something: you can have lovecraft THEMES mixed in without having the whole package. So yes, even a game that is more action focused can be greatly inspired by lovecraft.
Honestly, Bloodborne touches on Lovecraft themes really hard late game. Early on I thought it was just "muh werewolf hunter" but it takes a pretty interesting turn midway through the game. Plus the text on madmans knowledge (the "humanity" in the game) is lovecraft as shit.
"Skull of a madman touched by the wisdom of the Great Ones.
Use to gain Insight.
Making contact with eldritch wisdom is a blessing, for even if it drives one mad, it allows one to serve a grander purpose, for posterity."

Then I just downloaded that first epub format on that arkhamarchivist page and extracted the rar into the calibre library folder. Then I started calibre and picked add ebook from the top bar. Then you just pick the file that came out of the rar and it adds it so that you can read it right on your computer, I don't own an ebook reader like kindle or anything. I don't get the Bloodborne debate, it's pretty stupid. One side says Bloodborne is the best Lovecraftian game, the other says it's not Lovecraftian at all. Despite not being a perfect representation of the themes Lovecrafts work are focused on, it was clearly very much inspired by his work. Something doesn't have to be entirely derivative for it to quality as an -ian of anything. Even then, Lovecraft is obviously not Bloodborne's only inspiration; it's an amalgamation of various gothic horror sources rather than a single thing.
>>339740641

>>339740971
>what do people mean when they say "lovecraftian"?
>some unfathomable ancient horror from outer space?
That's just one part of it. Problem is that a lot of people seem to think that only very specific things make a game "Lovecraftian". A Lovecraftian game is anything that draws a lot of inspiration from his works, be it the whole "humanity is insignificant and the protagonist can't do shit and then kills himself", or the ancient civilisation that was here before us and is now slumbering beneath the ice and/or the surface of the sea, or maybe the whole formless tentacle monster thing from space which might be the most superficial of them all, it's still no less Lovecraftian.

For the alien bits you gotta run like the bitch you are because you can't hurt it; you're not even close to being its equal, BUT you also get to beat the shit out of other humans, alternatively watch them get torn to shreds by the previously mentioned alien. I think a good mix of occasional deliberate combat (as in; not super fast paced) vs non-spooky enemies, running or hiding from your cosmic horror of choice and a fair bit of exploration and puzzle solving (these kinds of mechancis can either be great or absolute trash) would be optimal. Keep ammo for your shitty revolver incredibly rare and make each encounter that ends in a murder feel jarring enough, etc etc.
I enjoyed bloodborne, but a fair few other games have done it better
eternal darkness, probably my favourite of the bunch, makes good use of multiple timeline/unusual reality themes, and involves plot consequences over multiple playthroughs, you never actually feel very powerful within the world, and they integrate the rune system into the gameplay in a very satisfying and unique experience that makes the gameplay feel like puzzle solving, which works really well for the game design.
In bloodborne, I felt the dream aspect, and most of the great ones were underutilised, really, moon presence was the only one that left a noticeable impression, they felt like statues in the games story, rather than beings that held influence.
BB's story was at it's best though when it focussed on the split in byrgenwerth, and the events in yharnam, I feel that this is represented both by the game diminishing in quality after old yharnam, and the general substance of the game world's relevance into the lore feeling malnourished. Byrgenwerth was a vital location, and yet in the actual game it had been reduced to a couple of rooms and a courtyard.
Bloodborne's twist was disappointing for me because it never felt like it expanded in a way that souls games could, the insight mechanic was underutillised, the amygdala, and the crying sounds were nice, but there could have been so much more, and at different parts of the game. There could have been more direct visual changes in enemies, weird unusual effects and sounds, or even cool sanity effects like endless hallways or anything to represent what the insight mechanic should really be doing to the player.
That being said, I do feel the DLC helped a lot, it expanded on the importance of the dream state and it's relevance, but I was still relatively disappointed by the lack of potential weirdness they utilised

The Shunned House and The Shadow Over Innsmouth are a good place to start. Lovecraft's writing style is complex compared to what's in most books today. One of my friends called it pedantic. Any way you look at it his stuff can be a boring chore to read for some people. The two I reccommended have enough mystery and suspense to hook a new reader. If you liked them then you can go on and explore his other works. At the Mountains of Madness is a pretty long one but it is good. Nice mystery and suspense there. The Alchemist is shit. Complete shit. Anyone with half a brain will see the twist coming from miles away.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
It's the only single survival horror game that had me legit scared. First half or so of the game, you don't even get weapons; and healing requires your main character so sit down and stitch his own wounds instead of HEALTHKIT +20HP.
It has a BRILLIANT adaptation of the chase scene from Shadow over Innsmouth, not having read that book just yet, I was running around scared shitless. protip: bolt every fucking door you can.
Unfortunately the game is a bit bugged on the Xbox, and then the PC port was even more buggy. Just don't alt-tab out, since that crashed the game when I played it.
Also, you have to run on the inner route of the path to optimize your speed after the last checkpoint - if you just run on the middle of the road, you won't make it. You have to take the inner part of every curve, which was pretty odd at the time (I don't remember if diagonal running helped or not).

The Witcher games actually has some Lovecraft stuff in it.
The first game has that race of sea people that you fight in the swamp. Those are based off of a lovecraft story, though I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head.
Then in the Witcher 3 you can stumble upon an island on Skellege where everyone attacks you and it turns out the castle there has been taken over by cultists worshiping the old gods and waiting for their return.

Del Taco shits the bed in the writing department. His visuals, when not heavily reliant on CG, are usually on point. Cameron's CG visuals are usually on point regardless how you feel about his movies. Since Del Taco is such a big fan of Lovecraft, very little liberties likely would've been taken with the writing. It was his biggest passion project according to him. It would have at least been ambitious.

Lovecraftian CREATURE design seems to be catching on in some circles. It's relatively easy to do, and makes for memorably unique types of experiences that most audiences aren't familiar with.
Lovecraftian settings and storytelling are another matter, as they rely on dreams, vaguery, and other elements that make them harder to pull off/write around and make for stories that are somewhat unsatisfying to the general public. I don't think that part is catching on at all, Anon.

Bloodborne.
One, because other lovecraft games simply aren't that good. ED was fun but relied too much on jump scares.

They've been separated into two entities by Cthulhu mythos stories by succeeding authors and the Call of Cthulhu tabletop roleplaying game preferring to have more Old Ones for the PCs to fight, but I agree with Robert M. Price on this one. Furthermore, if you read Dagon, Call of Cthulhu and The Shadow Over Innsmouth it's clear that Lovecraft was evolving a thematically similar idea ever since he had the nightmare that influenced Dagon. Hell, you could all but call Call of Cthulhu a less surreal re-imagening of Dagon.
>>339753352
They look differently, their sculptures look differently and I believe other Lovecraft stories that referenced his "pantheon" separated them as well.
>it's clear that Lovecraft was evolving a thematically similar idea
Um, what? Dagon's spawn literally breeds with humans. Cthulhu just fucks with people's dreams. He's also famous for being asleep, you know (except for the steamboat incident), while Dagon is active in the Dagon story (though it's kind of sleepy/nightmarish, but anyway). There's nothing common about them except for Sea. That's like saying Yog-Sothoth and Shub-Niggurath are the same thing because... well, they both are weird space god aliens?
>>339752202
As has been argued and re-argued in this thread and others, Bloodborne is a fine game and it's definitely Lovecraft inspired. But it's also very 30s pulp, and very Universal/Hammer horror monster movie inspired. There are games out there much more faithful to Lovecraft in spirit than a hack and slash where you can take down Lovecraftian horrors with your bare hands.
For that I recommend the following games:
-The Lurking Horror
-The Hound of Shadow
-The original Alone in the Dark
-Shadow of the Comet
-Prisoner of Ice
-Anchorhead
-The Dark Eye (1995 adventure game, more Poe than Lovecraft)
-The Black Mirror series
-Scratches
-Darkness Within parts 1&2
-Eternal Darkness
-Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
-Chzo Mythos series
-Amnesia: The Dark Descent
-The Last Door

Where pray tell was Dagon described in detail in any of Lovecraft's prose beyond being tall and monstrous (traits that it would have in common with Cthulhu, as well as living under the sea)?
Also, it's been a while since I've read it, but in The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories its editor, S. T. Joshi, goes step by step in his annotations, quoting Lovecraft's own letters, on how Dagon came to be out of a nightmare (something Cthulhu conveniently incurs in "sensitives") , and how The Call of Cthulhu was Lovecraft's reworking of that idea.
>The volcanic upheaval that temporarily exposes long-drowned horrors above the waves, for example, reappears in "The Call of Cthulhu" (1926)".[14] Other parallels between the two stories include a horrifying tale told by a sailor rescued at sea; a gigantic, sea-dwelling monster (compared to Polyphemus in each tale); an apocalyptic vision of humanity's destruction at the hands of ancient nonhuman intelligences; and a narrator who fears he is doomed to die because of the knowledge he has gained. S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz call the latter story "manifestly an exhaustive reworking of 'Dagon'".[15]
>As you once did for the vacuous Rom, grant us eyes, grant us eyes. Plant eyes on our brains, to cleanse our beastly idiocy.

>>339754463
His offspring is described in detail in Shadow over Innsmouth. Why wouldn't he look similar to them.
I dunno what you quote is supposed to be a proof of. So the stories based on the same real life idea. That doesn't make their characters the same, assuming they exist in the same universe, anyway (Lovecraft liked having his works being set in that kind of universe, though, hence his common self-references).
Posting his headstone.
>>339754234
Yeah I really enjoyed it, which is why I was surprised when I went on the wiki page and saw that Joshi claimed it was universally acknowledged as Lovecraft's poorest work.
It was pretty simple but it worked, with the constant doubt ofthe first experiment still being out there, the dean having gone on a cannibalistic spree and is still living, locked up in an asylum, West having killed that guy to get a fresh specimen, that entire passage/description of the Harlem Smoke when it's on their doorstep, with the kids arm in it's mouth
I think what disappointed me a tiny bit was that theheadless guy who knew how to revive people didn't revive Herbert West's head as he carried it off as his final revenge
Personally, Rats in the Walls didn't really get to me, don't know why.
Haven't read the Festival yet
Shadow over Innsmouth is great except for the ending, the narrator suddenly going full cult in the span of a couple of paragraphs feels a bit rushed, and overall like Lovecraft got the idea last minute and sprinkled the family stuff in the beginning of the story so it didn't just simply come out of nowhere. I think there should have been a clearer decline and degradation over the course of the story so that it came more naturally[/spoiler

I liked herbert west because the main character seemed like a good guy that had done bad things, and the reanimated thing being out there is sort of like how you can't escape from your past actions.
It was just a cool story desu
I liked rats in the walls because it's like a typical story of going down into a scary place and finding a monster, except the main character was the monster.

You are looking at the Deep one's focus of worship too literally. Both "father" Dagon and "mother" Hydra are names borrowed from ancient human mythologies, worshiped by half human hybrids that had a foreign alien element introduced into them ages ago. Conveniently enough, if you mix the appearances of the mythological Dagon and Hydra, you'd probably end with something looking like Cthulhu, suggesting it might have been the spark that ignited such mythologies in the first place.

I too liked Herbert West. It feels closer to more traditional gothic horror than most of Lovecraft's other work. The character himself reminds me a lot of the Frankenstein depicted in Penny Dreadful, though it's no wonder since the two character overlap in more than one way. One might have even been derivative.
>>339749957
that is some videogames bruv
>>339755151
A fairly new one I'm assuming. I think the original said "I am Providence".
>>339755689
I don't even remember "mother Hydra" in the original story, to be honest, so yeah. I know the Expanded Universe has Cthulhu's Starspawn who look like cute little cthulhus (shut up DnD nerds), but ehh, that's kind of silly. Anyway, it makes way more sense that Dagon being Cthulhu, the only pro argument about which is that they are seemingly inspired by the same idea - which is a bit weak.
>>339755151
>>339755828
I don't think it's a headstone, those usually have date of death. Lovecraft died in 1937.
>>339732963
You got them good with this one!!
>>339756015
>>339755828
ya ur both right. Think its just a monument.
>>339756351
Yeah, here's the original.
>>339734178
>This is actually how catfags see themself
>>339734187
I feel again
Not really in the games due to the Halo games having a lighter tone then the novels, but the forerunner novels for Halo are outright cosmic horror with the flood and ancient ayy lmao's to ancient ayy lmao's.
It's actually pretty good cosmic horror too.
The first one starts off as a very dense, almost dull sci fi story taking place a hundred thousand years in the past, and is mainly just worldbuilding, but the further you progress the more fucked everything get, eventually getting into fever dream psychological horror and then full out cosmic horror.
>>339733450
That whole map is based off of lovecraft you fuck. You fucking retard.
>>339733195
> Bloodborne is literally the closest video game to lovecraftian horror in the modern era
Are you just a gigantic fucking idiot, or a Bloodborne fantard?
Ignoring the fact that Terror From The Deep is infinitely more Lovecraftian, there's also games such as Call of Cthulhu, which IS Lovecraft, or Dead Space, Alone in the Dark, Eternal Darkness, and Quake.
>>339735759
The funny thing about most of his stories is that in half of them the villains turns out to beFUCKING nyarlathotep
>All these combat focused games
Squidverse is real
>>339731021
I didn't wanna like it but it won me over. Idk senpaichi it's just a pretty good game.
>>339733896
This is the best reply I have read in this site in months.
I'm really impressed.
Anybody else here play Crawl?

>>339752990
The point of lovecraft isn't that his deities are omnipotent. It's that they're so imposing that they might as well be, and speaks volumes more about our own weakness than their strength. Like an ant gazing at an elephant.
As for victory conditions, let us not forget some lovecraft heroes have confronted the horrors and come out ahead, like Carter.
>>339758567
Wow, a pixelshit almost up to par with average NES gameplay? Well I'd never expect to see that
>>339758334
What exactly impressed you, basic observational skill? Anyway Unreal was better in most aspects, especially map design.
>>339758567
>Anybody else here play Crawl?
I do!
>>339759010
Or in the Horror of Dunwich. They killed the abomination IIRC, or managed to somehow.
>>339759461
Sometimes people take time to give an exhaustive and detailed explanation to someone who's clearly talking out of his fucking ass.
Not me.
This would have been fun but it turned out Yahtzee is worse writer than he is a gameplay designer.
>>339750078
Maybe the movie could be black and white, except for "the colour".
>>339739629
>>339740071
Fuck me I hope it'll be good
Got a huge Lovecraft urge after I tried Eldritch Horror the tabletop game, loved it so much I bought all the expansions.
And there's no vidya to satisfy my cravings for it.
>>339759956
I think that's what they did in the German movie, Die Farbe. No, I didn't see it.
>>339759640
It got struck by lightning.
Which sounds pretty gay, until you realize Cthulhu died in a boating accident.
ITT: We think Lovecraftian is Derleth.
>>339759640
>>339760263
Didn't they make some magic to make it visible and vulnerable?
It was just an offspring of a mortal woman and Yog-Sothoth, though. Yog-Sothoth itself is far more powerful.
>>339733301
>no. he didn't like atheists.
He called himself a "mechanical materialist".
>>339760496
wtf is that? sounds like verbal puke to me.
>>339760416
Yes I don't remember since it's been awhile since I read it but it came down the mountain, and the forest started to collapse as if something was trampling the trees. Armitage made some kind of spell and revealed the creature. It was something with appendices and legs but it had an old human face that looked like the rapist.
>mfw I found the parasite things inside the giant heart in Tower on Latria in Demon's Souls
>They look like what's described in the Dunwich Horror
Oh shit
>>339734231
what part is that?
>>339760803
Every Facebook "atheist" is verbal puke. No one truly understands what that word means to existensialism anymore.
So many atheists worshipping idols all around the internet, religiously.
>>339760803
See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmicism
Lovecraft was an atheist and skeptical to religion.
>>339732075
>Stroggoloyd.
I had a giggle, m8.
>>339761051
thanks.
>>339761028
>So many atheists worshipping idols all around the internet, religiously.
That those levels of oxymorons makes my head heart, its damn fucking sad is what it is or to use a real word relating to that blank check of existentialism, it's quite lugubrious, if you forgive me polishing off that old fancy word.
>>339761725
head hurt**
Head heart would be an awesome monster design.
>>339729897
you mean Cronenberg influence. Because lovecraft's creatures are meant to show an incomprehensible beings that the mere sight of them will confuse you and make you go crazy. even what we see as Cthulhu is more cronenberg then what is meant to be shown. giving a lovecraftian creature a lifebar takes the fear out of them.
I remember Beyond Good and Evil having some lovecraftian stuff mixed in with dystopian sci-fi. Then again, I was a kid back then and things seemed bigger and scarier.
The point of lovecraft is that you are never truly told what's going on, and that you cannot face the enemy directly; in fact, he doesn't give a shit about you or anyone for the most part - you're that insignificant.
Anyone read any of M.R James? Lovecraft cited him as a huge influence and a lot of his ideas could work well in a game.
Who /dreamlands/ here?
Reminder...
>>339763181
xD my friend.
Can i share it on r/4chan?
>>339763181
everyone said niggers back then. that's nothing special
>>339747196
he was a poorfag and needed universal healthcare, mane.
>>339759882
It sure would be nice if he'd get a fucking artist to help make his games not look like Newgrounds shitware. Hell, some of the games on Newgrounds still look better than his shit. He has all those fans, surely there are some artists among them that would help him out for free. He could make a good game and make it look good at the same time, there's no downside to it.
>>339733450
The newest map has even more Lovecraft shit than SoE did. Saying Zombies is strictly Lovecraftian is inaccurate, but you'd have to be a drooling retard to not see that they're clearly trying to go that route.
>>339764058
This. He was essentially a NEET his entire life, complete with racism and crippling fear pretty much everything. If the Internet existed during his time, he would probably end up on /r9k/, /pol/. or /lit/.
>>339729897
Sekien no Inganock
>>339764920
Nothing can save a txt narrative based game from that lack of talent
Seriously, his writing is on the lower rungs of slashfic tier and he's not aware of it.
>>339734231
Wasn`t the name of the guy who kill raiders Pickman or something?
>>339732983
Im just afraid of them reusing doom 2016 assets and making it a shitty design like nudoom, i get the game is fun but the atmosphere and design was so hideous to me. It feels so generic so I can't imagine them pulling off something close if not great to Quake 1, I can see them doing a Quake 2/4 homage type design, but im still hoping them get someone better to be behind the art design.
>>339760420
>there will never be an fps to top Quake 1 and Unreal 1
>>339733472
During Wrath I almost thought Blizzard hit their sweet spot with the Lovecraftian Old God stuff, but then Cataclysm came out and shit on everything. MoP's dead god stuff was pretty cool though.
>>339729897
Darkest Dungeon is pretty lovecraft in terms of setting and tone but it even nails it down in the mechanics.
Its also narrated by a guy known for doing kickass audio-book versions of Lovecraft's stuff.
>>339743271
It's kinda weird that Japan love Lovecraft so much.
>>339731541
the amnesia games also
>>339746450
yeah agreed
>>339770505
Level design is a forgotten art, shitters like Miyazaki get confused as good level designers because they have good art teams behind them.
I will say that I think third person perspective offers the most in terms of interaction with the level, Tomb Raider games pre-Pratchett spawn were outstanding in that regard.
>>339771598
sunless sea is good too
and they have a fear/stress mechanics also
i like how in DD some character can become worse if don't take care of them
>>339772430
>slow boat is good too!
>>339772501
yup
