PIGEON MILK
I've never survived more than 3 days.
God damn I love Banished.
Im making a huge town that crosses a river. There is a church right next to the river, so when the merchants come rowing into town, they see this towering church.
>>339718257
>There is a church right next to the river, so when the merchants come rowing into town, they see this towering church
I wanted to make a witty comment on how this was childish and stupid but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I'm happy that makes you happy anon. Thanks for reminding me

Uh, what?
Is Banished actually good? I was under the impression it was a weak dwarf fort knock off for plebs like the other similar games.

It's a very basic city builder. It's a good entry to the genre.

Decrease difficulty, learn the ropes, enjoy.
I don't get this whole memery of "I set the game on highest difficulty and then get hard on, because I've beat it". It's a chill game, no point starting it with crippling yourself so you need to struggle for first 2-3 years and then just have chill as usual
>>339721670

I kinda rushed the comment because the thread was far down the catalog, but what I meant to say was that Banished is one of those games that can tell stories with the games mechanics and the players imagination instead of heavy exposition cutscenes like MGS or every single of todays AAA titles.
A better example of this kind of storytelling is found in grand strategy games where you take over the world through politics and war in a fairly dynamic environment where random shit happens.
Banished kinda has this, but it relies more on the players imagination.
I believe this to be the unique kind of storytelling that games have over other entertainment mediums.

>>339723339
I always build too many houses thinking I was going well and all and BAM baby boom
Man banished is a easy way to kill a fuck ton of time. I feel like calling a city sim is kind of undermining it. Building is easy, managing your resources so your whole town dies in winter/reproduces too fast/ reproduces too slow is the real challenge. I was pretty stoked when I made my town massive and covered a huge portion of the map. It was completely self sustainable. I would just watch it and left it on for 3 days straight

>>339723693
You really make me want to start again. I just need to find the last buildI'd pay for it but I'm still waiting for my salary after 3 months so no

I tried to get into it. I think I even reached 10 years count. My population was about 50. It seemed too slow for a chill game. I couldn't speed progress up too much, cause every winter I had to manually make workers switch from working fields to chopping trees or rocks. Then in spring, i had to switch them back again. Annoying that they didn't make some kind of automatic solution for this.

The issue I have with Banished is the lack of information as to why something happened. An example would be that I built another fisher among the ones I had because the fishing was so good, suddenly it all tanked and no one pulled in over +200. But the game never gave me a reason as to why it happened, I tried demolishing a couple of the fisher buildings but it never recovered and I had to start over.
And the lack of buildings really hurt it in my opinion.

Try using every space available, but keep some open spots all over the town. Build a forester lodge in town that only plants trees. He/She will fill the empty spots with trees, giving the town a nice organic aesthetic.
I did not spawn right next to my river, I started the settlement from scratch with only a wheelbarrow, which I later removed. The starting area is now a farm town.
>>339727030

That's not the point. It's how I play games like that. I always kid myself that this time around, I won't just do a boring grid... and bam! Another grid. I guess I've got that ever since SimCity 2000, where this was THE most efficient way of building and now I can't get over itThis is a reason why I can't into Cities Skylines, where the game actively punished you for griding.

You might have some greek blood in you, but try centralising your town around something uneven like a river, or in a narrow valley like area between two mountains. You can even go as far as building your town around a mountain, with farms extending outwards. Imagine that the villagers revere the mountain as a God, like norse pagans. The norwegian word for hill, ås, stems from Æser or Æsir in english, the term used for Gods like Odin, Thor and Tyr.

Go for buses for transporting passengers first. Wait for 1-2 cities to grow over 1k citizens, build airports near them. Build simple rail network first, expand when needed/have money.
Learning curve is pretty step, but it fucking worth it

>Not foraging for food

It's really that simple. You can sustain your initial growth up to 100 people without a single tile of farmland. It's not even some sort of "git gud" memery, because this is literally your only starting option - to forage for shrooms and herbs and roots.
Survive first winter and you are absolutely set.

Pic related. I made it to 1000, but the farms became ridiculously inefficient, making people travel entire half the map to make it to the farms when there were houses right next to the farms, which also walked half way across the map the other way.
I was doing really good with like >50k reserves of food but efficiency started dwindling because of inefficient housing. Maybe if I could manually allocate workplace for sectors of houses, the winter wouldn't have taken 400 souls that year.

>Is Colonial Charter good
Depends what your definition of "good" is. It's adding a lot of buildings/professions and therefore make a game more interesting. But at the same time it's making it more unforgiving, because there's a good chance that your mistake in assigning jobs become obvious (and deadly) after quite a long time, when it's too late to do something and save the village from dying.
In my opinion it's good and worth at least a look

>>339740815
Try building self-sufficient communities. The biggest mistake planners make is centralization of food production.
While you may have farms for grain and veggies everywhere, you might have fruit orchards and protein pastures / fishing quays concentrated in specific areas, which means people from clear across the map will have to travel there to get a complete diet and likely starve on the way.
For this reason, I play with Colonial Charter for the protein crops. Livestock just don't produce enough for the real estate they require and not every community can be near a lake or river.
>>339745749
because it removed about a hundred things sim city 4 did perfectly fine
shove out actual gameplay so you can tweet about how much shit your city produces in a day
Just started playing Caesar III the other day. I never really had any interest in city building games before but I'm liking this one a lot. I shied away from the genre because I can't be motivated to make a city for the sake of making something that looks good but this game has a good amount of challenge and a campaign with objectives to keep me invested in the gameplay mechanics.

>>339740628
I love colonial charter because of its bloat.
It feels really satisfying to finally upgrade my urban center to tier 3 townhouses with officer townhouses to fill in the gaps.
Plus all the little aesthetic mods like being able to create an actual pier with a flagpost or a marble statue to house my trading depots gets me erect.
>>339745749

But even without, the biggest problem that remain and no patch gonna fix it, city's max size.
It was way to restricting for such game.
>>339745749

>>339745894
Well it wasn't the best SC game but it certainly wasn't "shit". My only real issue was that the maps were fucking tiny. Bigger maps would have made planning and city building way more interesting.

>>339746406
I think the sheer fact that the maps were tiny in a game like simcity is more than enough reason to class the game as shit (that and the awful agent pathfinding), despite the fact that it had plenty of good ideas.
>>339740628
It's great if you like exploring a new take on vanilla.
Unmodded Colonial Charter can be a bit jarring as iron rocks just drop ore which has to be refined, and many typically inexpensive buildings in vanilla have been given more complex recipes involving refined resources that require industry to be set up which makes early-game progression take a lot longer.
Despite that, it's enjoyable when you get used to it. It's an improvement over vanilla for the compression aspects, mainly. You eventually produce tinned food, which doubles your production efforts, and you get it to people using giant markets for even map distribution. Scenarios like running out of space on the map for foresters to keep up fuel supply is common in vanilla, so CC lets you build logging barges with a currency industry and import precious metals to support it, which is surprisingly efficient if you product surplus trade goods (which you will).
Pretty comfy.
>>339745749

It's more that agricultural demand would eventually plummet the more educated your sims became. There's no real reason to invest in it, since it doesn't scale with your city, there's no way to satiate development naturally unless you have the absolute smallest town, and it produces significant pollution you can't mitigate.

Planet Coaster - The true sequel is going to be amazing. Already played the alpha and so far I'm really impressed. It's going to shit all over RCTWorld.
>>339748310
Let's put it like this:
If early access was always done like in this game, it would be the best thing since invention of sliced bread.
The game rocks and it's still just early access. While fully playable. The devs are really great and actually listen to things people say, but don't bow down completely to vocal minorities. Game is definitely on constant support and getting closer and closer to being finished, with visible progress each update.
I feel like a shill now. Either way, definitely the best game that came out of the "survive on your own in the wild" craze of '14

I know you can. It's just not practical. This is the very reason why road-blocks were introduced in Pharaoh. But then with Emperor the devs realised it's still not enough, hence decorative gates and their semi-controlled flow of walkers.

or get random event such as toxic fallout, causing you to stopp having your colonist go outside else they will get sick, and eventually die. Leaving you to starve to death if you didnt stack up on food.
Fuck, there's a city building game I used to play as a kid in the early 2000s, and I can't find it online anywhere.
It was on PC, and I think it came from a cereal box. I could have sworn it was monopoly-themed (there was the utility station, waterworks, and railway), but it didn't play like a board game, it was a city builder.
You collected taxes and income and shit from your buildings and you could upgrade them. You could move the camera down and see the 3D models of the buildings.
I've tried googling it multiple times but it always came up with monopoly board game simulators.

It... kinda is... But...
It takes a while to load between the various areas, There are only 9 set maps you can really pick unless DLC...
But even the DLC from what I hear with the Tundra one is reusing other building models and saying it does something different. They don't even change the text on the buildings.
The end game building is a money sink that does nothing as well. It's tiny and costs like 1 million credits, And it has add on pieces that cost another 500,000 credits to build the hall ways and end pieces. So to make something large and interesting, I would have to make like 25 million credits. And again, It does nothing and looks/feels small.
There is only one faction, serperated into different groups on Arctic, Moon and Warm climate. You don't fight people for space, but compete against them in a global market where later on you can buy them out. There is no multiplayer with friends to build and compete. The combat sections are in secluded zones that feel like just a cheap arcade game where you mass your units and move them to your enemy while scouring the map for resources...
It does look pretty though. Worth ATLEAST $25 at the most.
>>339727739
This is all I want, a pseudo-medieval version pharaoh/zeus/caesar-type city builder. to my knowledge, none exists. anno feels like a spreadsheet, stronghold has almost nothing to do with city-building, so banished is the closest I guess but it's stil not quite it

Here you go:
https://mega.nz/#!wZ4GnZQK!qTYRKcR4_RBs-uotqYaKUV7Z9RwYTx8HgKPk6Dh8l64
Mount the image with WinCDEmu or your preferred virtual drive and install as normal.
The "Unlimited" version has better NT support than vanilla, so it should install just fine.
Afterwards, you may need run it as admin, as it uses its install directory to save games.
If that still fails, additionally run it in Win XP compatibility mode.
The patch might not be necessary.

said, it's a basic city builder. But to expand: it is a game whose tone is so pitch-perfect it transcends the limits of its mechanics.
Like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SOC- there is a shit load wrong with that game. Its buggy as fuck vanilla. But the graphical aesthetic, the people, the feeling of walking into town after a harrowing frenzy of battle with mutants and bandits and hearing that strum of guitar and the russian babbling of your fellow stalkers as they rest around the barrel-fire. There is nothing that comes close to that. Its why morrowind is better than skyrim, its why Majora's Mask (just barely) beats OOT for the n64 zeldas.
Its why banished is fun as fuck. Struggling through winter, flourishing in summer, managing fires or plague or trading effectively. All of it with a gentle soundtrack and quiet clicking and ticking and clanking of your townsfolk at work. It just 'feels' good. Not many games capture this.
Also you shouldn't compare games to Dort forb. Its in a class of its own.

A lot of people say its the GBA one- Harvest Moon:Friends of Mineral Town. I personally agree with the latter. Depends on if you want to play it handheld vs on the computer (unless you are a lucky faggot who has a working N64 still)

There's no way to view priority or work order queue, but you can just use the priority increase button to move any task you want to the front of the queue.
The game only re-assigns workers as needed and as priorities shift.
So if you have 12 builders working on a bunch of stuff, but want a specific building done first, you can increase that building's priority. Let's say the building can have up to 4 builders on it. This will re-direct 4 builders from other projects to work on it while the other builders just keep doing whatever.
You're pretty much a telepathic overmind.
