If that was the case the PS4 would've failed as well. The reason initially failed was because it wasn't marketed properly and continued to failed for other reasons. After the wii, Nintendos brand value had plummeted beyond their wildest calculations. This was the damage the wii caused the company despite its massive sales, and the consequence was that gamers had already left Nintendo and only Nintendo fans were going to buy their new console.
It didn't help that the design philosophy behind the wiiU was made with one foot still in the casual market. Nintendo missed the chance to properly secure third party developer support and the core audience of gamers back with the wiiU, two vital things that determine the success of a console.

You know, if they ARE making the NX work with VR, it's possible that they're going to make the NX at least competitive with PS4 Neo and Xbox One Scorpio when it comes to power, not just to allow VR functionality but it would translate to better graphics and such. Maybe they'll also make their own VR device that's also compatible with games that work with Oculus and other VR devices. Or allow Oculus and other VR devices to work with NX, along with having their own proprietary VR device that has added visual improvements, or maybe just them licensing Oculus' VR tech and selling a Nintendo-branded Oculus at a markup--you know Nintendummies would eat that shit up. And it would be optional, and not going to be forced like how the first gen of the Xbone was bundled with the Kinect.
THAT would be the ideal scenario. Of course, knowing Nintendo, this scenario is more likely to happen:
It's likely that they'll stick with their current toaster build, the NX build that's about the same power as the current gen (non Neo and Scorpio), and only make some VR-enabled games that only works with a Nintendo-proprietary VR device. In other words, Virtual Boy 2.0. And those NXVR games are going to look like some frankensteining of Virtual Boy and 3DS--the graphics is going to be shit. The majority of the NX library is going to be ports of Wii U games, some new NX games (most are rehashes of stale IPs; a few would be new ones), and a few VR games (most of this few would be rehashes of stale IPs with a VR twist; a few of this few would be brand-new).
PLEASE NINTENDO, make a consle that would be competitive to the Neo and Scopio, have VR (but optional for most games), and start licking 3rd party boots to get them to make NX games. I don't care how. Send them geishas wearing kimonos made out of money or something.
