It was fine.
Problem is it coincided with a big realism push in FPS games. Post Call of Duty's success, so there weren't any alternatives. Doom had become something of a symbol against that, and Doom 3 rode right in the face of it.
If you had your Duke Nukems, Shadow Warriors, Quakes etc still riding high Doom 3 would just be an oddball, not a shit.

The multiplayer is literally a joke that nobody takes seriously and it's upsetting that it's even in the game since it obviously hikes the price up by a large margin.

The game is decent, decent as in it meets the minimum of what an FPS should be, but it could and been more loyal without being the exact same game from over 20 years ago. Also the fact that it's just called DOOM instead of DOOM 4 or DOOM: SUBTITLE really sours my view of the game.
