I think it's that Jesus is still the "messiah", but just like Christians reinterpreted what messiah meant outside the original Jewish context Muslims reinterpreted what messiah meant outside the Christian context. He's not divine or anything, just another prophet. He ascended directly into heaven rather than dying (there is another OT prophet who did that), and will return during the end times.
