All souls games are designed to be beatable by a single player. 4 players is complete baby mode without invaders. Invaders are literally the only thing that attempts to keep co-op "balanced" before the boss battle. The very first time I got invaded proper outside of the usual fight club zone was when I was already in the castle, getting a little bit past the twin dragons.
I didn't want to bother with finding him or dealing with a duel at that point because I just wanted to finish the game first round, so I popped my only seed. I still didn't see him for a few minutes until his name bar popped up while clearly taking damage from the fire carpet.
Since there was only one open entrance into the building past the dragons, I decided to wait on the balcony above the entrance and drop down on him when he came through. A long fall and great machete killed him in one hit.

But getting every single item and baiting out every enemy while playing so safe, which I've seen in many friends co-oping Dark Souls 3, it doesn't look fun even when observing from a distance as an invader.
I also once got accidentally summoned as a blue in a 3 man invader ganking squad. They would camp invader spawn points and just kill them over and over. It seemed too personal for me, and not fun. I intentionally separated from them and got overwhelmed by mobs. While the trio were trying to save me from them, it took a while since they kept killing the mobs.

Why shouldn't I use phantoms just to annoy people and alt+f4 every time I'm losing? Or just spend 20 minutes rolling around invader without doing anything and get hate message from him? It's all part of the game

My only complaint with the sword spear so far is if you hit a shield with it you fucking bounce back like 5 seconds.
