Gearbox has no good rep in the industry.
First, there was Duke Nukem Forever. They bought the rights to a game that was basically like Half Life 3, in that no one ever expected it to be released but people were hyped about it anyways, and released what they got with little improvements. It was reviled, killed the franchise for good, and Gearbox was blamed. Not entirely their fault, but they shouldn't have even released it in the first place.
Then, there was Aliens: Colonial Marines. Basically, Gearbox wanted to make their own video games, but didn't have enough money. So they made a partnership with Sega to develop an Aliens game, made a very barebones (and bad) game with the license, and used the money Sega gave them to create their own games (I think Borderlands 2?) So they stole money, basically. Went to court for it.
Next, we have Borderlands. The first game was a bit of a cult classic, in that it was released with no real fanfare, but then exploded in popularity due to word of mouth and a decent quality. Gearbox decided to take that franchise, and fuck it up. They had a guy named Anthony Burch write it, and for the most part, he fucked it up. Cookie-cutter plot, "kooky" bad guy, bad characters, and worst in the eyes of the community, took lots of internet memes and used them as plot points (such as the big threat of the early game being a robot called "Wilhelm," and having the Wilhelm scream go off when you beat him).
The writer got called out, the writer went crazy, he made it even worse with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (Did exactly the same thing as Borderlands 2, but this time he added political messages).
And finally, the CEO of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, has been known to be a huge asshole to people, online and in real life.
And that is the summary of why people hate Gearbox so much.

Gearbox owns some of the rights to Duke but not all.
Apogee/3D Realms handed Duke 3D and the Build engine to one of the original devs who has a Pannenkoek-tier knowledge of the engine and game. he's cripple and his wife has Lupus, he relies on royalties from Duke 3D and other Build engine games to cover her treatments.
Gearbox is trying to sue him saying that Apogee/3D Realms never had the right to give him those properties, also they removed Duke 3D from all online retailers so the guy's money gets cut off.

So, battleborn will be going free to play about three weeks from now, in what will be a pretty much unprecedented shift. They're going to have to convert all sales to premium accounts that get some kind of special "founder" status and a bunch of gold to spend in the store.

Man, shut the fuck up. Battleborn's open beta had 2 million players and Overwatch had about 9 million. It was much more popular, yeah, but looking at sales figures, it's blatantly fucking obvious that people tried it and didn't like it, and the playerbase dropped off significantly even before Overwatch came out.
It's just a bad game. People didn't like it. Overwatch certainly didn't help and Blizzard threw some gut punches here and there, but it's incredibly clear that even without Overwatch this game would have been a fucking failure.
