Playstation recognised that VIDEO GAMES are what make a console great. Nintendo began to lose sigh of this after the N64 (wonderful system) 360 was too late to realise this and by the time the Bone came out they didn't just lose sight of it, they attempted to make it into a media centre as a primary function. They have nobody to blame but themselves. All fans of all consoles have wanted the same thing and made it clear that this was what they so desired.

Ironic you would say that seeing how the PS1 was also sold as a CD player, the PS2 a DVD player and the PS3 a blu ray player. Not to mention even since the PS1 the best selling games focused on realism and cutscenes (in the PS1 case games would have literal movies embedded in them with FMVs). Where as Nintendo consoles never have multimedia purposes and usually don't have FMVs due to lower storage space compared to other consoles at their time.

Sony has sold all its consoles are pure hardware gimmicks. Many times copying Nintendo. First with the PS1 itself and later with everything from eyetoy to the PlayStation waggle stick.
Its third party games which kept every Sony console alive. If third parties stopped supporting Sony like they have done to Nintendo for 4 gens, PlayStation would die pretty much in one generation. While Nintendo has somehow kept itself alive just with first party games.

Except the Sega Saturn did it first and failed. Clearly using CDs isn't the only thing that made PS1 successful. Billions in marketing from Sony and third party companies did it.
