I always steered clear of Morroblivion and Skywind and all that shit because they completely replace the engine and it's just Skyrim/Oblivion but in Vvardenvell, complete with Skyrim/Oblivion's combat style, level up system etc.

Oblivion's combat is legitimately worse, and I'm not saying this as a compliment to Morrowind. I'd rather the frequent missing than the annoying stagger literally every time you hit someone who blocks, while everyone on earth is a floaty hitsponge with the same bad voice actor screaming the same four, cringy lines. Just because Oblivion decided to commit to being an action game doesn't excuse it for it's extreme lack of quality. Only a genuine idiot would recommend it for its combat.

It's also annoying when people recommend Oblivion for its side quests. Only a genuine idiot would recommend it for its writing.

I was so terrified of them I would not go anywhere near them, I was CONVINCED they were a hostile monster that as invincible because hucking fireballs and shit at it didn't do anything, and if I got to close it would 1 shot me and eat me.

Magic is actually overpowered, but it only really gets to that point late in the game. Up until that point it's miserable because magic doesn't regenerate and most builds are mana gimped and you need to pick specialized races and signs for mana multipliers that each have their own nerfs. It's still fun though.

Magic is pretty fucking great in Morrowind desu senpai. Its pretty weak in the beginning, but after a few hours you pick up the skill and later on you can craft your own cheesy spells.

My favourite utility I always loved to use is one that gave you crazy jumps for 1 second I forgot how its called, its been like 8 years or so now since I last played it ayy paired with a slow fall to avoid death. Makes getting around the world so much fun. You can actually see the cells loading underneath you

0.39 means "the 39th release", not "39% of the finished product".
1.0 is an arbitrary step when they've reached at least full feature parity with the default engine. It might be the 41st release, or the 42nd, or the 156th.

Currently they're about 95% there, but the last few things take some time. Especially since they would like to complete their Construction Set replacement as well, which is currently lagging behind.

In either case, Morrowind is practically fully playable with OpenMW right now. What's left is minor things like "sometimes the AI doesn't behave 100% identical to vanilla morrowind" or a bug here and there.

The old engine was shit in all kinds of way. Modding, especially scripting was very limited, it was full of bugs and had shit performance. Not to mention that it only ran on Windows.

OpenMW intends to rectify all that.

The Punabi and Sulipund shit where you have to kill the Greek fag for not paying denbts and then kill the other bitch if she doesn't join, that was the first hint that she was a mean bitch. I love it how use of magic in Morrowind requires actual intelligence. Not the character stat, but player intelligence. The trick is to always have the right spell for the right situation and sometimes even multiple versions of the same spell. Ran into a bandit with a steel warhammer? Summon ancestral ghost and throw frostballs at him. The ghost is immune to cold and since it is also immune to normal weapons it will serve as an excellent tank at earlier levels. Ran into something serious? Swarm it with skeletons, bonewalkers (least and greater) and watch its strength and endurance get punted into nothingness. Longer and shorter water walking for quick travel and not to waste time waiting if you want to dive for a pearl or two quickly, levitation, interventions, mark/recall and even a levitation 1p for 20 seconds on target in order to suspend a target helplessly in mid air. Or you can be a vampire cunt and just cast absorb health aoe on your crowd of minions target included and facetank everything.

I find there is more to do and find in Morrowind compared to Skyrim and Oblivion. Especially when you beat the insanely long questline you still only completed 1/3 of the story if you have the DLC. Ontop of the fact that you probably have 30 or 40+ hours already just strictly doing main story you have another 300+ hours of side quests to do not including Tribunal and Solstheim

I have 600+ hours and only completed main story & Tribunal but no Solstheim. And did a huge number of side quest and still not done them all.

It's weird that they found a near-perfect formula for distributing content and leading the player through it, then completely abandoned it in later entries. I could lead a double life and have a false identity as some commoner in a coastal town. There is so much autistic potential and build choices.

Balmora is certainly the best fleshed out city and still feels comforting and familiar to me, but my personal favorite town is Gnisis, if only for Broladas.

I frankly don't like Vivec much. I feel the they didn't have the technology needed to realize the idea. The cantons feel isolated and individually very small and samey, it doesn't really have the feel of a metropolis. Environmentally speaking, Morrowind is at its best with wildernesses and frontier towns. Mournhold is a more successful take on the idea of a big ass city though again, not really convincing. The sewers are really cool though.

There is honestly not a significant difference in dungeon variation between Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim.

They are all fairly linear and uninteresting. The biggest difference is that Morrowind has the largest portion of hand-placed items, followed by Skyrim, and then Oblivion and Daggerfall being almost full random.

People need to get over shitting on all of these games - they are all good for different reasons, and there is no benefit in arguing between them.

Quests mods and other content mods won't be affected by OpenMW. The new graphical enhancement mods are already supported. The only reason to wait would be for people editing the source code, and there isn't going to be many modders doing that outside of the people who work on MGE XE and MCP.

Depends on your tolerance. Of course you can play with no mods at all, and I personally I still play with only a few very simple mods.

If it is your first time, I recommend installing the game+expansions, the official mods, the unofficial patches, and a delayed dark brotherhood mod.

All of those integrate seamlessly to the original core game and the only one that "alters gameplay" is the delayed DB mod, which is almost universally considered desirable for new plays because it's more of a fix for the Tribunal expansion not playing well with brand new characters.

The only thing I personally add after that these days is Fair Magicka Regen to make pure spellcasters less cumbersome to play, but that's not something I would recommend if you want the original game experience.

Morrowind Code Patch fixes a lot of bugs in game,

Stuff like unarmored only working if your wearing at least one piece of armor, or a high mercantile skill actually making you earn less from bartering.

It also lets you pick and choose which fixes you wish, so if you don't want any of the gameplay influencing things they include, like the ability to enchant arrows/darts/throwing stars, you can turn that off.

Can't say anything about graphics overhaul. I've never cared to much about graphics to begin with, still play it unmodded in that regard and it suits me just fine. I could see how the dated graphics might be jarring for someone used to newer games, though.

I once played with max distant land and without fog. I used to think it was a limiting factor, but the fog is so integral to the morrowind experience.
Take away the fog and you take away the atmosphere, and the sense of a grand world.
Vvardenfell suddenly feels really tiny if you can view all the way to the other side of the island.

I'm always baffled by anons who consider mages in MW as weaker or harder to play. Magic has been overpowered in pretty much every TES, you could already abuse the shit out of it in Arena. I can't imagine being a bulky overpowered warrior in Morrowind who can't even teleport around and jumpspell everywhere.

Easiest way to play MW - Unarmored Breton Atronach, with conjuration & mysticism as a major skill to drain everything to death. Get a few constant enchantments with restore fatigue, restore health and possibly Shield effects. Fill out your spellbook with cheap shit and use bound spears on everything that you don't drain.

Any MW build is going to be godmode if you have constant effect restores/shields.

The biggest hurdle for magic in MW is that magicka only regens through potions or resting.

Fair Magicka Regen of course removes that hurdle and then spellcasters are just as overpowered as everything else.

Alternatively, if you create a constant Fortify Enchant item and boost your enchanting over 100, all cast-on-use items become only 1 point to cast and the points regenerate quickly. This is actually far more OP than all of the other magic schools combined, because it means you can cast maximum-power spells basically for free instantly with no casting animation at 100% success rate regardless of your skill in the actual magic school.

I went with an Apprentice Breton but now I wish I picked Atronach instead. There's no restore magicka spells or enchants and potions are a hassle, but summoning is easy shit.
Hell, you could even enchant an item with CE summon ancestor ghost and have permanent magicka regen
