If they just ignored/refused the request there is a strong chance nothing would have come of it. Even if that person goes on to try and make a lgbt-rights issue out of it, the developers would still come across as reasonable and appear to be the victims of a brow-beating campaign.
Instead, the developers chose to declare they refused the request on the grounds of identity politics. They brought up the trouble all on their own when they could have just side stepped it. So clearly they want to make a political issue of it, a dumb issue of it at that.
