People bad at sniping get 4 kills and 2 deaths spending most of the game trying to get sights on someone before they die or running away frantically as a Genji spooks them.
The moment someone with fast reaction time and decent experience with the game's maps and general sniping gets hold of her you wind up with POTGs where they stand at one end of a kill corridor and team kill with ease.
She shoots too fast, reloads too fast, has far too big a clip, and is a big ol' stupid head.

I think a lot of the maps are pretty poorly designed to give that kind of advice. There are little side areas but most of them just offer HP or bring you up onto the 2nd level of the same linear path. If you don't have wall running or flight you really don't have any options for moving outside the designated route.

She's good but requires mindgames and is more situational than she looks. Stay in the same space for more than a few seconds and Winston's on your ass. If you play her defensively, only take shots when you can get the kill and you switch spaces frequently enough to trick/flank enemies that try and get you/dodge you then you'll have a grand old time.

The shield lasts more like one second, and Winston's ult doesn't move sentry form Bastion. It's understandable not to have problems with Bastion though, since most of the people that play him are the worst players imaginable.
Also, never use Winstons ult on Bastion, it doesn't work out. If I'm already damage when he gets mad, I'll just snap out of sentry form, and then back into it while flying through the air and burn him down before he can close the distance, even with the jump.
Once you start getting matched with people who can actually aim, the entire game starts to revolve around Widow and McCree.

She is one of those characters that I feel guilty about playing because she is so easy to play. Hitscan weapon, the head hitboxes are fucking massive so you dont even have to be on mark to get instant kills and plays of the game all the fucking time.
She is broken, maybe not on consoles where people aim like crippled orangutans, but on PC you can pull of charged headshots with no effort whatsoever.

She doesn't need a laser sight because a single shot is loud as fuck and completely visible compared to Reaper (you have to look to where he's teleporting to).
Her AR does less damage than S76 and has significantly more recoil.
Her hook line is on a 12s CD which means Dvas can easily keep up with her + it needs something to latch to.
Her trap sucks and like you said is only there to alert her to flanks, but is often better used offensively anyways since it does respectable damage.
Widowmaker is countered by Tracer, Genji, and Dva.

You completely deny flanks for the entire time they're up. Its also incredibly easy to prepare when you know someones comming around the corner, you'll get the first hit.
Characters like Reaper, Tracer, Genji and any other flank based character will not be able to function, and they dont even get to know the ult is up.

Playing against Widowmaker gave me a newfound appreciation for how fucking good and well designed the Sniper in TF2 is.
Emphasizing headshots and the harsh penalty for missing shots not only made the class rewarding to play, but it made it feel less shitty when you got killed by one. His unrivaled long-range supremacy was balanced out by him being an easy kill if you got flanked at close range. Even things as small as being forced to scope out after every shot promoted skillful play.
On the other hand you having fucking widow, who is the polar opposite of everything the TF2 sniper was designed around. Every single thing about her is just cancer in its purest form. Her ult is the most bafflingly stupid thing ever put in an FPS.

There's certain heroes you fuck and certain heroes that fuck you.
Your job isn't to kill anyone and everyone, it's to take out the high value heroes on the enemy team (Mercy, Widow, Zenyatta, sometimes Lucio if you can manage, Tjorb turrets if he's not ulting) and then get out all while building up ult.
If you're pubbing, you don't always have a healer so learn where all the medkits are on every map (this is good advice in general).
Your ult heals you to 100% so don't pop it til you're a little damaged (but of course, don't be too greedy and end up dead before you can use it). It's pretty hard to kill with his ult (unless there's a mercy or widow, pin them against a wall and beat them to death), your job when ulting is to knock people off capture points and to disrupt the enemy to give your team time to get things done.
Understand that your E blocks projectiles inside and outside, meaning if you're out of it an your enemy is in it, they can't hit you. If you're in it and they're out of it, they can't hit you, if they're in it with you they can hit you. So it's tremendously important where you position the edge of the bubble, because you'll be dancing in and out of it as you taser people down.
And finally, stay the fuck away from Reaper and McCree, they're going to kill you.

He is generally considered "better" than mercy to most people but the two are hugely comparable. I play Mercy constantly and I beat/out-heal Lucios almost every single game. They are mostly just different healing styles.

I think a big reason why widow is so OP is because of the map design in this game. Excluding KOTH, every map is going to have at least 2 choke points which the other team is going to need to pass through. It's just incredibly safe because there is very little risk of someone actually sneaking up on her. If the enemy team is spamming down that choke point with bastion torb whatever, it is really tough to actually get in her face. It is also tough to take out the people holding the choke point, because there is going to be a ton of pressure from widow. The only real chances in that case are to try to just be a better widowmaker.
If Blizzard designed maps with actual side paths a la TF2 she would be a lot more manageable.

I think its because playing Lucio means you also get to shoot back and contribute to bringing an enemy down while giving everybody heals just by existing and being a hard fucker to take down because your passive heal affects yourself as well. Playing Mercy means you have to babysit somebody and pray to all gods you know that that somebody is good and will do the work for both you and him, all while being a squishy as fuck hero that EVERYBODY will target first.
Her revive is also much more of a game changer than Lucio's sound barrier is especially on defense, and sometimes playing her can be overwhelming when everybody in your team is being attacked at once and everybody's losing health but you can only heal one person at a time.

i remember playing an escort map as winston and another teammate chose winston, and so we held the last 3 minutes at the final point, we'd syncronize our bubble shields, one on objective, one in front where the enemy team tried to frontal assault and we'd hulk jump in and out zapping and tossing shields while they shot at only shields and flailed for 3 minutes while we pushed back the payload.
another instance, was holding down a capture point and as winston i'd hulk jump into enemies near spawn, zap around, bunny hop and zap, melee once a while, and then hulk jump out to the objective and toss another shield and look for heals.
treat your hulk jump like D2 barb's leap attack
if u need to reload in combat, melee and hopefully have a jump ready if u need to gtfo
genji can't reflect ur zapper
ur bubble shield is better/equal to reinhardt's but only for 5 seconds or so
distrupt like tracer does, instead of blinking around people, jump thru them and use your shield.
works best if a team backs your play and doesn't bitch out.
im obviously forgetting something else, but you should be smart enough to figure it out. as winston i have low playtime, but high objective kills, damage dealt, positive KDR, consider playing him like a berserker class from Killing Floor.

I am aware of that, I do play Widow sometimes myself,she is my 4th or 5th most picked hero. What I am saying is that all complaints about Widow here and on OW forums is people complaining about being outplayed. If she can scope you while doing a hook jump it's your fault and not hers. Theres a handful of heroes that counter or make things a lot harder for Widow, the fact that you can't be bothered to switch is again your fault, not hers. Widow is a good pick but she is not OP, if you want OP characters play with McCree or Lucio.

Some chokepoints are just impossible to get to the widow as reaper, like the end phase of Kings Row on either side shes pretty much impossible to get to without getting a headshot when you teleport near her.

i've found hes a good offensive medic, as his ultimate is good for pushing on objective.
mercy is a flying medic, a bit more micro than macro, conventional doc role, but she has that AoE paladin ressurection which is a very very useful passive for taking/defending objectives.
with lucio vs lucio, it's whoever uses their ult first greatly helps. the rest is team luck.
with mercy vs mercy its whoever uses their ult last has the final say. especially when the team is there.

Lucio is good because you dont have to babysit him, hes REALLY good on KOTH maps. He can push people off the point and off the map and get to the point fast with the team. on KOTH if you dont have a lucio is pretty much 90% of a loss if the enemy team does have him

There's a really high roof she can get on that barely anyone else can and she covers the entire two archways that lead inside. Definitely not Tracer, Probably not Genji. Winston neaded to get close before leaping (so crossing her line of sight and her entire team)
Who the hell though giving Sniper ability to reach places no one else can was a good idea?
The only thing we could do against her is me shooting the concussion rocket as Phara to knock her down, getting shot down while it's still flying and hoping the rest of the team can push through.
