Different guy, but even as a description of playstyle, "metroidvania" is an EXCEEDINGLY poor term. And by almost any definition of the term that makes even a lick of sense (i.e. bearing resemblance to Metroid and Castlevania games that copied Metroid), Shantae doesn't even fit.
I'd liken it more to Zelda, if anything. It's more segregated into zones and dungeons rather than being a contiguous labyrinth. Also, it doesn't have much in the way of RPG horseshit like SotN and Aria. That's the 'vania part of metroidvania. So if you do still feel compelled to liken it to Metroid for some reason, just call it a Metroid clone.
