This is why Persona 4 was complete cancer.
The first two Persona games followed the story of If... and the other SMT spinoffs that existed in that universe.
P3 was a new writer who was afraid to touch the story of P1 and P2, so he did his own thing, with slight nods to P2 to let you know it is in the same universe as 2, that is, the recreated world from EP.
4 just threw this all out the window and tried to recreate Persona 3.
Now that it hit it big, it's impossible to know if any of that still happened, in fact, it's implied SMT was only a game in P4.
I know how autistic it is to care about this shit, but SMT had such great lore up until the PS2 era, I even enjoyed the OVAs.
The Raidou game was the last dying flame of an implied timeline, but it was too late, Nocturne threw most of it out of the window by allowing a convenient excuse to put any future spinoffs into their own little bubbles, I just can't wait until it's confirmed the entire Persona series is retroactively placed there, since it might as well be.
