Free run is broken as fuck and the fact that symphonia doesn't have it is one of it's biggest strengths vs later 3D tales games. Instead of having to tactically manage enemy positions and use moves to move enemies/yourself around the battlefield you just circle strafe around enemies until they whiff something and then land an 100 hit combo

Symphonia is the game that permanently turned me off of JRPGs
I beat it on the GameCube and realized I never wanted to waste my time on one ever again. I completed a few using emulator fast forward but that's it.

On this note, was Kratos ever going to tell Lloyd that he was his father? He learns at the start of the game, and Lloyd is told late game by Yuan. It seems like something that, if I were Kratos, I would be really happy to know that my son is actually alive and tell him.
I know they obviously have to keep it for late game from a writing perspective for writing, but in-game it doesn't really make sense.

This right here, nah man. Almost everyone was so damn bland. Every damn character so damn middle of the fucking road. Most of the other games have at least one stand out character that I either liked of flat out hated for one reason or another, but Symohonia had nothing going for it characters.

/v/'s opinion on Xillia has nothing to do with why I think Symphonia is overrated. I don't hate Sypmhonia, nor do I hate the Xillia's. They both have there flaws but the I've liked pretty much every Tales game I played except for Legendia and Tempest. I honestly just don't think Symphonia deserves the amount of praise it gets.

I actually really liked the sequel. Sure, it wasn't as good as the first one and Ratatosk Emil was an edgelord, but there was a lot of character development there, and the last two boss battles are very good, if frustrating. The story is interesting too.
But it's some bullshit that the old cast are locked at level 50. Why? It just forces you to use the shitty monsters when you want to use Lloyd and Genis and makes the old cast look weak as fuck by the end of the game.

In all honesty, I believe people would like this game if it didn't have Symphonia in the title. The combat system in Dawn is fucking fun as hell. You can air combo for ages which most Tales games seem to lack unfortunately.

Honestly I pretty much never used free run in later Tales unless it was a bossfight that I couldn't just block through. 3d movement is pretty much a meme, at least until tales team develops a combat system like the modern naruto games.

The game was absolutely great for its time and was the game that defined my adolescent years. If I had to find a flaw it would be the dated battle system. No free run and a very dated combo system let it down on recent playthroughs. However, as I said, it was fucking fantastic for its time and comparing the battle system to recent Tales games is simply unfair.
Top fucking game though. I will always remember and cherish my time spent with this game. It holds a very special place in my heart.

At least it fucking had puzzles, no matter how silly or convoluted some of them were. If I remember right, Xillia had literally one "puzzle" and it was shoving a block two spaces in order to climb it and get an optional chest.
Tales combat is surprisingly great for a JRPG but having puzzles in between all the endless combat at least shakes it up a little bit. Later Tales games are just hallways and monsters.

I played Tales of Phantasia ages ago and the fucking encounter rate was unfuckingbelievable.
I made it to some tower and defeated the boss, but had no way of getting back to town quickly and I was low on supplies. Then the millions of random encounters fucked me in the ass and I literally couldn't progress so I just dropped the game after a while.

Sure, it can do tons of damage if you're up against a load of enemies, but that doesn't really ever happen outside of regular battles which don't require that much firepower.
It CAN, however, be good against really big bosses, which are fairly rare.
In the end, Judgment is just a really cool looking and yet fairly useless spell. Symphonia is pretty easy for the most part anyways, so you can use it as much you like.

God I wish Tales would go back to how it was back then. I have such fond memories of playing ToS with friends. It's all we played and talked about for what feels like years.
I hold Vesperia almost just as high as Symphonia. Vesperia was basically the best spiritual successor to Symphonia. Yes, the story was overall shitty, but the combat took everything Symphonia had and improved it so much. The characters were also great and the art style was amazing.
But recent Tales games have done away with so much that made the older games more endearing. No world map, just corridors. No TP. No unlockable costumes, you have to buy them.

A large amount of drama in ffx came from the sole stupid fact that nobody decided to tell teedus a damn thing, there was no good motivation for witholding the info. The story hardly varies either, its just doing the pilgramage, cockblocking seymour,finding out yuna is gunna die, then killing a god to stop the nonsense. The characters didn't help, either.
With symphonia you had a great buildup, with collete's symptoms slowly creeping up. Then their dreams get shattered to pieces when they finally get to the holy tower. The plot only blasts off and does even more new things once they hit tethealla, the pacing was fucking fantastic for a jrpg.

Do you really need me to explain how a world map like in Symphonia and Vesperia is different from empty, huge corridors like in the Xillias? World maps are old school, sure, but they work. They serve the purpose of giving you the idea you are travelling a vast world without the game devs having to actually design an entire world. They dropped the world map in recent Tales games because they thought they could actually design a compelling world. But they couldn't. It's just two or three corridors with monsters and half a dozen chests. Just stick to a world map unless you're going Skyrim.
As for TP, that was a great system, especially with auto-gel functions. Nothing wrong with it. Graces and Zestiria had terrible systems instead of TP. You can combo everything together, but only until your 1-digit number goes down to 0. Then you have to wait. And do it again.

Because the wide variety of artes and spells aren't actually that interesting. Every character is one dimensional. At least alter games gave casters some melee artes and vice versa. Genis can ONLY cast spells. Same with Raine. Its dumb. Only Kratos/Zelos have any variation in combat style.
And no, the most challenging bosses in this game are average compared to the more properly difficult Tales games. If you think bosses in this game were hard Xillia 2 or Graces would shit all over you.

It's always the swordfighters for me. I always used Lloyd back in the day but these days I play as Zelos a lot. Guy can fucking combo like it's Vesperia.
Apparently Regal is very fun to play as but I never got the hang of using him. Much like Judith, it seems to cost a lot of time to perfect the playstyle, but once you do it's apparently great fun.

The amount variance in symphonia's plot gives it great pacing, while X's is just really slow in comparison. Ignoring the whole two world thing itself, you would shift your attention throughout the game skirmishing with the 5 desian masters, the renegades, the summon spirits, Kratos, and mithos. X is a really plain roadmap in comparison, which made it much more of a slog to play for me.

Baldur's Gate is a party based game with fights that are tactical, not action based.
If you could only control one character at a time, choosing Minsc and hitting attack wouldn't be a very attractive option. Baldur's Gate's combat is great because you have a thousand options between spells potions and positioning that makes the encounters interesting. I think that mostly depends if you enjoy this type of thing in general or not. I'm closing in 30 years old and I almost beaten the game and liked it. It's a welcome breeze of fair air compared to all the tryhard games. It's not really a flaw it's just that this was the first 3D tales and other 3D tales since then have had better battle systems and 3D movement, particularly Vesperia.

I feel like Vesperia was the point where they finally got the 3D battle style down, but was also right before the battle gimmicks started to get out of hand. I feel like Fatal Strikes and Burst Artes weren't nearly as obtrusive as Zestiria's linking or Xillia's Chain Link Spam are. Starting with Vesperia, people could purchase levels, gald, item sets, and costumes.It also had a lot of DLC costumesthat repeatedly went on sale.
However, the problem with current Tales is that they've gone full Scamco by significantly reducing the amount of things you unlock in-game.
Even if you remove Vesperia's DLC, it still had the largest amount of cosmetic stuff in the series.
