Honestly it is no worse than parry daggers in DaS2, and parry shield in DaS. If you're getting punished for R1 spam then it serves you right, if you're getting parried a lot in general then learn to mix up your attack patterns. Fist weapons have quick parry frames but they're brief you a slight delay punishes it
it's a very overrated parry tool that only has one advantage over small parry shields, almost complete absence of recovery frames
instead you get all your stamina decimated in a single partial and less parry frames
i would rather use small shields than this thing

Even more so than that, why did they remove power stance, one of the best mechanics from 2. Also no shielding in the right hand for some reason and you can only get the basic r1 with weapons in the left hand. That in particular bothered me mostly because I wanted to cosplay pre corruption Artorias.
