A sequel wouldn't work because there's nothing left to say about anything in there, the mechanics are ripe for more experimentation.

That just happened to be part of the good story. The game certainly can't be blamed for pandering I would say.
And I truly think most of the current fans weren't aware of that shit prior to taking an interest.
