Don't know, it's the only version I played. But it definitely feels good, very immersive. You have mostly rough and mean sounding voices along with one or two squishy victim sounding ones where it is appropriate.

Well alright then.
I really enjoyed the game, but I wish I had went in more blind. I had a friend tell me a lot about the game beforehand, including a lot of tips to get me started, so I pretty much knew roughly what I was doing at every point in the game.
Is Gothic 2 better than the first game? I'll probably wait a while before playing it to let the first game cool off.

Gothic 2 is so fucking amazing if you liked the first you need to go play it.
I wish I could explore Khorinis for the first time again. Not many RPGs managed to match that feeling, not even the 1:1 recreation they tried in Risen (Tarant in Arcanum comes close).

Does Risen count?
Just bought and beat it a few days ago. I own Gothic, Gothic 2, Gothic 3 etc from years ago, but I could never get the first running and 2's combat just felt off to me. Played for 12 or so hours if I remember in Chapter 1 alone, got to the Mining Valley finally, and then just lost all will to continue.
Risen's combat was at least instantly engaging and much easier to pick up, and they eased you into the bullshithard enemies a bit more in that game as well.

Its like that for all their games though in fairness. All the Gothics and Risen games boil down to "Pick one, get some minor variation in your quests, the one you picked will show up in the plot a bit more but the story will stay on rails regardless".

I got that feeling. Risen just felt like the perfect balance between difficulty and fun, maybe I'm just toocasualto really get into Gothic's mindset.
I'm currently playing Risen 2 for the first time, man, why the fuck is it so bashed? While not as good as the first one, it's much better than G3.

Playing Risen first is fine but trust me, you will appreciate Gothic 1+2's design once you get into them and realize how much more atmospheric they are and how much more satisfying it is to get stronger and overcome obstacles in those games than in Risen where you basically get a maxed out character in Chapter 1.
Risen is not bad in comparison to many modern style sequels but it's nowhere near Gothic's quest, dialogue and world design.

Yes, especially the early game is split between the factions. Also in Gothic 1 you end up with the same gear in the end, no matter what. Your progress in G2 is much tighter knit with your faction.

It's a shame mages in NotR kind of feel like a challenge run instead of a legit class. There is very little advantage in being a mage compared to paladin/DH.

Well it depends on your taste and if it has to be 3rd person action but obviously the Ultima games (which Gothic is inspired by).
Might and Magic series the 3D ones from 6 onwards are kind of similar in terms of exploration.
The Divinity series (Divinity 2:DKS especially in terms of combat but everything else as well because it's inspired by the same games).
Betrayal at Krondor has a similar feel to it in terms of setting and structure.
And games like Dark Souls and STALKER also share some aspects and design principles.

I don't remember exactly what weapon I had at that point, but I remember the quest was fucking easy because of how much damage I did to the crawlers. Killed them in just three or so hits. You definitely need a better weapon.

You learn as a player just like your character grows as you play through Gothic.
For example, in the beginning enemies will destroy you not just because they 2-shot your character but also because you just mash attack or try stuff out.
Later you can take on 10 orcs at the same time not just because you have armor but also because you realize that you're actually invincible while backstepping, you use the environment, learn the attacks of enemies, etc.
And it's not even cheap because those games fuck you over so much, it simply feels good to fuck it back.
