Isn't one of the big criticisms of Zelda games that the way you switch between the different items is really clunky? The spells in the Harry Potter PC games perform the same sort of roll but their use is much more elegant.

Yeah, I sometimes used it for the more annoying platforming sessions. I wish someone used the fact the unreal engine is awesome, and modded the game to have regular WASD controls instead of the horrendous tank controls.

Sorcerer's - kinda shit, but has the Potter charm
Chamber - fun shit, fun to try and 100%, even though there's missables. Even a bit challenging.
Azkaban - loses a tiny bit of the charm, but has really fun parts. Used to be my favorite until I got better at Chamber.
Fifth Gen (Just PS1, really)
Shit. Avoid.
Sixth Gen (Xbox, PS2, GC)
Stone to Azkaban are mostly the same, with PS2 versions being the best. Or so I hear, didn't play them yet.
Goblet of Fire onward are the same on all home consoles and PC, and are pretty shit.
Goblet - PC port is absolute shit. Can't even change resolution. Play on a console with a friend or two, makes it kinda fun.
Order and Prince - Mostly about exploring hogwarts and collectathoning useless shit with the spells you learn. Kinda shit, much closer to the Movie license than the Book license. Fun for one playthrough if only for the freeroam Movie hogwarts.
Deathly Hallows - Part 1 is absolute shit. 2 is slightly better. Cover based Gears of War shooter, with different spells acting as different weapons.

Handheld is where they really shine.
GBC Stone and Chamber are turn based JRPG's with some overworld puzzles. Great fun.
GBA: Stone is bland shit, Chamber is a really fun playthrough. Azkaban is a sequel to the GBC RPG's, with improved visuals and combat. Great fun if you like that kind of stuff.

The Years 1-4 Lego game is my favorite comfy game. It's a typical Lego game, so you're encouraged to play through it multiple times to use the abilities/spells you didn't have the first time. There's a shit ton to collect, of course. I'd recommend it though.
I haven't played Years 5-7 yet but I assume it's not too different apart from the story.
