I remember playing this for hours. I made an Arena map in the editor where you defend against waves of enemies. Pretty fun and teached me basic shit in triggers, if/else, iteration, recursion and shit.

I've slowly gotten better at managing my eco while fucking up the opponent, sadly it's in teamgames mostly, I tend to get bumrushed in 1v1's before I even got my hydro up and running.

Personally I would start with medieval 2. Shogun 2 is good but it is dumbed down compared to earlier games, at least the campaign is. My personal favourite is empire/Napoleon though.

Shogun 2 is pretty neat. Probably the best game out of the newer Total War games.

Supcom is 1000 units per side; but you can use settings so when you betray your (ai) allies you get their units and unit cap (up to 11000 on a 12 player 11v1)
certain buildings count towards unit cap though
I think there's also some mods to uncap the game
In any case the game rarely hits unit cap in multiplayer anyway

For what you're talking about, the answer is simply yes
Though I think FAF increases the units per side limit to 1500, 5000 would melt everyone's PC. To put it in perspective, 1500 is a fucking lot - it's enough to take about half of an 81KM map.
The largest maps are 81x81KM in size. That's pretty fucking huge.

the game handles up to 12k units natively and 8k units on official maps
the real limitation is actually getting to a unit cap that high

i can't play CoH or anything else anymore.

I try to play multiplayer, get into a match 2v2, teamate drops out after losing one resource point, or just get smashed by rank 100+ while I'm with two rank 12s.

feels like all RTS have really tiny UI nowadays, they never scale properly with high resolutions and I've got bad eyesight. I must have some autism because tiny UIs piss me off a LOT.

basically the only rts games im playing at the moment. hate how laggy HD is but I dont have an original aoe 2 copy. hated AOM's expansion full of reskinned units from other races. now im just waiting for halo wars 2 and dow 3 and hope they arent extremely disappointing. (I know halo wars 2 will be but I love the halo style in general and halo wars 1 was fun)
