It's a huge ripoff and does not hide it at all but the gameplay itself is far closer to Metroidvania than Dark Souls since it's 2D. Even has the movement upgrades. You're missing out if you can't overlook the fact that it's trying to be 2D Dark Souls. No other Metroidvania has as much playstyle/gear variety. And very few have world design as good as S&S too.

Not when metroidvania gameplay is shallow as fuck purely by merit of RPG mechanics and no real restrictions on the player's movement or options.
More doesn't necessarily mean better. Classicvania has much more involved and strategic gameplay in a single average boss fight while modern CV has to add a shitload of gimmicks and frills to even come close.

I think 3 is the second best and I would agree that it would be the better game if not for this major flaw and also the fact that character balance is quite dodgy whether you play US or Japanese version.

It's been a while since I played but in the section where the game vertically scrolls and you have to keep up with it, there's a knight that will 'pop in' exactly where you will likely be standing and hit you.
Bosses I'm a bit more hazy about, though Dark Trevor basically needs to be exploited to be beaten. I vaguely remember death being nonsense too though I can't remember why.

No, it was generallyconsidered the worst of the metroidvanias for ages. In the last year or two /v/ seems to have gone full hipster and started liking the traditionally unpopular titles like PoR and HoD. OoE also seems to have went from extremely popular to bottom end for whatever reason as well.
