Nintendo literally bullied developers during the nes era. Best case of this was Tecmo. Nintendo did alot of shady underhanded stuff and when Sony came around devs jumped on the sony dick since they weren't going to be treated like that anymore.
Population growth, the opening of global markets, Sega shooting themselves in the foot with the Saturn, N64 cartridges were more expensive to produce than compact discs, and compact discs finally allowed game developers to play the movie directors they always wanted to be.

watch this they tried their best to maintain a stranglehold on the industry. Devs were just fed up
Think a lot of it had to do with the move to 3d. Although they made two games that basically created the modern 3d mechanic they never were able to produce a large enough library of 3d games.
If gaming had stayed 2d for all these years for some reason Nintendo would still be on top.
