Fates' entire plot was ruined due to waifushit. One of the driving forces of it's plot is the importance of Corrin's blood family. But since otakus will want to fuck the family members, they had to say "Oh but they're not ACTUALLY your family!", rendering your connections with the entire Hoshido side completely moot. Not to mention that they had to shoehorn in about a dozen extremely forgettable child characters, and make up a reason that they could exist that sounds straight out of fan fiction.

Why are Defend chapters objectively the best in the series? I tried PoR chapter 8 with only four units deployed and it was pretty tight.
Genealogy is the best in the series. I don't usually do the my opinion is the only correct one but I'm putting my foot down on this one.
every FE game is good
FE1 helped establish series traditions while being one of the first big SRPGs. Still has retro appeal and is playable, if a bit slow. Smuggest portraits.
FE2 has unique mechanics and is a solid NES rpg. Map design hurts it though.
FE3 is two games in one and has dismounting. Best manakete mechanics in the series and the introduction of support bonuses.
FE4 made every playable character feel unique and have lines while having a super replayable 2nd generation. Plots are good now. Skills now exist to make units stand out more. Some slow maps and balance issues exist but every character is usable at once and the music is amazing even by FE standards.
FE5 is pure tactics. Some of the hardest stuff exists here and the game is (mostly) reasonable about it. Balance is suprisingly solid even if there's like 5 units that suck a lot. Staves are overkill but you still need to work your ass off if you wanna cheese lategame.
FE6 lacks objective variety but makes up for it with challenging maps. Supports exist for everyone now. Game moves fast and introduces Hard Mode. Route splits help replayability.
FE7 has better balance and more objectives than FE6, even if the difficulty is overall lower. Still a fun challenge, and Hector Mode is a creative extra.
FE8 takes a different approach. Branching promos are a thing. Game has a more involved route split. Pretty good villains. Grinding exists if you wanna chillax. A bit too easy but this is fire emblem so that's not a huge issues.
FE9 brings skills back and has aj insane amount of character development thanks to Base convos and good writing. Improved support system over the GBA games. Forging exists. A bit too easy even on hard, blame NoA for that.

Honestly anyone who says either of these have either never actually played all the games or are WAY too forgiving. No, Fire Emblem is not a perfect series and yes it has had bad games (even by 90's standards, something like the Marth games are pretty bad). It's just that as a franchise it's good installments (4, 5, 7, 9, Conquest) really are damn amazing.

FE10 has less character development and a messier plot, but the gameplay is on steroids. Tier 3 classes, height system, crazy defense maps, multiple armies, and then some. Faster paced than PoR and more difficult. Balance is wonky and supports being kill is a bit disappointing.
FE11 is super fast thanks to turn skipping options and makes a lot more improvements to FE1/3 than people give it credit for. Reclassing allows for a unique way of unit building by constantly changing classes to suit the current map. For a small script, the dialogue is actually pretty good. Gaidens were done in a weird way but it also allows for the pacing of the original game to be undisturbed. Ballisticians are playable and that's awesome. Warp is still broken.
FE12 adds a lot of stuff like more character convos, BSFE remakes, bonus maps, more gaidens, characters missing from FE3, a prologue, and an avatar. Unfortunately, not all of this is balanced and FE12 has some super shit unit balance. Still, the game has a lot to offer and the mechanics are still good. Lunatic reverse is a crazy challenge and Warp no longer exists on harder modes, discouraging warpskips.
FE13 has a whoooole lot of stuff.
Marriage and kids are bad, the avatar is back, skills are back, and there's a fair amount of new stuff like pairup. Again, not all of it is balanced and pairup makes it so that lowmanning is super encouraged and tactics turn into a number war. Bad balance on Lunatic and bad map design doesn't help this. Despite all that, voice acting allows characters to express themselves more, and its cool to see kids fight alongside their parents outside of FE4 Finn. For those who love statbuilding and making crazy unit setups, Awakening is a treat. Tons of supports too.

FE14 adds new mechanics too while balancing previous ones to mixed effect. The new pair up system makes positioning matter a lot, although lategame suffers from awakening syndrome where the best option is pairing everyone up again. New weapon system encourages you to not hoard strong weapons for lategame although stuff like Raijinto is broken for no reason. Conquest has some amazing maps, although other maps are meh and none of the paralogues are good. Birthright is fine earlygame but suffers from shit maps later on, and Revelation is a gimmicky mess. The plot sucks but there's some good characters, and the overall game mechanics are fine. Mess hall and capturig are fun to mess around with, and the kids are no longer all Ests.

But yeah, all the little things like character interaction between boss encounters, base conversations, as well as supports and all the story dialogue inbetween is what made me fall in love with PoR as my first FE. I liked the GBA games decently enough, but it feels like the 3DS games don't try to capitalize on that quality I liked at all.

Yeah, when I played I was quite disappointed because only Ike seemed to get boss convos frequently. There are some but it isn't nearly as frequent as FE7/8 who did it on virtually every boss.

I've only played through Conquest and Revelations so far, and thought they were pretty good. Story was ass but I liked the gameplay, so I figure I'd start playing the rest of the series.
I'm playing the fan translation of Roy's game to start (40 minute commute, so i can play it on my phone) and got Path of Radiance to play at home. So far I like Roy's game but I don't get why the accuracy is so bad for... well, everyone. I needed to kill the boss of one map with a hammer (40% accuracy) and it took probably 15 attack and counterattacks to actually land the hit. Also going from 3ds to gba for games like this reminds me how great the second screen on the 3ds is.
Is the DS game really bad or something? Thought about getting it but everyone seems to hate it.

I prefer Xander as is because he is naturally tanky, but making him a Lodestar temporarily is good because it can fix his speed weakness. I like Odin as a Dread Fighter -> Samurai. Selena can also work for Great Lord, and Hinoka of course, though Hinoka doesn't need it as much.
As for the Witch class, Ophelia is the best choice for it.
