Not necessarily, it's just gay characters are so fucking hard to do. When's it's mentioned, it usually is mentioned a lot more than just once or is a defining trait of that character. You barely see any characters that are based on heterosexuality and that's most of there character. There is no decent LGBT characters in videogames because there is no point for them to even be homo unless the game itself is sexual in nature (aka porn).
If the game isn't sexual in nature, having a character be LGBT has nothing to do with anything whatsoever and it comes out forced.

It's a deeper issue. Videogames can't even do straight characters well, let alone gay ones. They just suck at making belivable relationship in general unless it's player waifu chasing wish fullfilment.
I've never seen a character in a relationship that I cared about.
I've never seen a mom or dad character that gave a rat's ass about their children in a manner a real one would.
I've never seen a maried character that had a credible relationship with their spouse
etc.
Even ones that try really hard like Catherine still don't give you that much of a reason to care about the significant others.

He's not even the best example from that game. Veronica is a good example of a character's who gayness isn't awkwardly shunted in but it isn't half assed either and makes sense within the setting. There's a reason the developers brought it up again in Dead Money.
